There is actually a commuter bus operated by RabbitTransit (York county's transit authority) that runs between Hunt Valley and downtown York and another that runs from downtown Harrisburg to York. It could be feasible if you are absolutely set on living in Baltimore. But that would mean taking light rail to Hunt Valley, commuter bus to York, transferring to commuter bus to Harrisburg, then transferring again to a Capital Area Transit bus to Middletown. Not worth it.
Living in Harrisburg isn't
that bad. Everybody I have known has been pleasantly surprised by their visit.

Yeah, Rabbit Transit between Baltimore and York is... $5, I think? I had a friend that used it not to long ago to come down on a visit and liked it a lot.
