I am moving from San Francisco to Orono, ME and looking forward to it. I know housing in Orono is more expensive than the surrounding towns. I also know there is a paper mill in Old Town (where I think I'd like to live). Does anyone have input as to where NOT to live in order to avoid the odors from the paper mill? Any other input is welcome- Milford? Orono? Bangor? I hope to live close to UMO, but if need be I can live in Bangor.

If you rent at first, then you would have the opportunity to learn the area and after 6-months you could move again to which town suits you the best.

I live in Old Town on Stillwater Ave. Somedays, maybe once a month max, we smell the papermill. There have only been a few times when it has bothered us so much we have had to shut the windows. The papermill is right on the river and the smell is bad immediately around there, I think that street is called Main Street. Google map any place you are looking to live to see its location to the mill.

Old town is great and very close to campus, I commute there daily by bike or car. Milford and Veazie are also close to campus. The best way to find housing is with the Bangor daily paper or with UMaine's firstclass email system.

Good luck finding a place!

I don't think it's anymore expensive to live in Orono than Bangor. Orono doesn't have much of a downtown. Very few stores or restaurants.

Your MaineStreet user name and id are suppose to be used when you first login i think. However, my current login for MaineStreet and FirstClass are different. Here is a number to call tech support. they probably wont be open until Tuesday though 207-581-2506.

If you are a student they usually send you information about firstclass with your acceptance letter and info I think. Good luck!
