Hi there!

I will be in Portland in October for a day in October and want to take my days off and take a 2-day trip to Acadia National Park!

I think I may want to stop one of the ways going or leaving the park. Of course I want to be able to explore one of the cities and see a few good sites. Which one would be a better city to stop in to see sites, walk around the center of the city, etc- Augusta or Bangor? And why?

Thanks so much!!

Town centers have been replaced with malls on the outskirts. But bothh have nice downtowns for walking around. I know Bangor has quite a bit fro stores. Not sure about Augusta; haven't been downtown there is decades.

Bangor first and if you get a second chance, Augusta.

I agree. Avoid the shopping district. It's nothing more than a mall and strip malls, KMart and chain restaurants. You can probably shop those at home. Check out the down town area. It's small but nice. There are independently owned stores and restaurants. The parking garage is convenient and everything is in walking distance.

Bangor... walk along riverfront to downtown... eat either outside on the river at the Seadog or downtown in the West Market Square area... pick a souvenir in the Grasshopper shop... also check out the Kenduskeag Trail for a cool nature trail that goes right through the city. The Bog Walk is nice too if you have the time.

From Portland having just two days off to drive to MDI you will barely have much daylight time without making any stops to see much of Acadia so I wouldn't go to either. Nothing really special enough in either towns, unless you are interested in Maine's state government, to take away from such a short time to visit such an amazing unique place as ANP.

Except for the state Museum, Augusta has always been a pretty boring place. Bangor is much better.

Exactly right. Except for the State Museum, Fort Western, Rail Trail, State Library, Capitol Building, Augusta really has nothing. And Bangor has...., wait one minute or hour and it will come to me.
