Is there a reason why real estate is cheap in Bangor and some surrounding areas?

Yes.

The Maine economy tanked when artificial refrigeration was developed for ice production; and the ice-shipping industry collapsed. Starting at that point in history Maine's economy has had a series of failed attempts, one after another.

When the rest of the nation was in a recent housing boom, most of Maine was not.

Maine has been in a long term depressed economic status.

Currently the rest of the nation is in a recession/depression; which has only effected Maine in a reduced manner. Since Maine had not ridden the boom cycle it simply has little to lose in a bust cycle.

Homes in Maine that saw the pseudo-inflated prices of the housing boom were mostly restricted to the tourist regions of Maine; and were not seen on the majority of Maine.

What does this all mean today? Moving to Maine you can find fairly cheap housing, it has been low priced for decades. You will not find an abundant supply of jobs.

If you already have a job that you are transferring into, or if you are coming to Maine with a pension; then life can be sweet in Maine.

How big of an area around Bangor? I checked out Waterville today and found I liked it a lot more than I previously gave it credit for. It's a little over an hour away.
