Hi All:

Saw an opportunity in Orono. Where would a person go for hiking, canoeing, skiing (downhill and x-c), birding, fishing, other cool things in that area? I am primarily interested in places within an hour or so of Bangor/Orono.

I believe there is an organization in the area called MOAC. Maine Outdoor Activity Club - that you may want to hook up with.. If you call Epic Sports, a store in Bangor, they possibly can put you in touch with them. In addition to the activities it may also be a great way to meet new people. I know this organization has been very active in the Portland area for quite a while and I think it got going in Bangor area several years ago.

In Orono you can drop a canoe in the river and go fishing. Same river that passes by my place.

If you're willing to drive an hour, you might as well drive a little further and go to MDI/Acadia National Park.....There's also Bald Mountain in Dedham for hiking. Here are some links for you to check out.

Mainegrl has it right. The beauty of Bangor is that you can live in the third largest city in Maine and be a 45 minute drive from any outdoor activity you can think of (except maybe downhill sking, that would be further). I'm not going to list them, because it truly is everything.

Bangor bog, Bangor forest and boardwalk. See some smaller parcels of trails within Bangor.

Fish and canoe in the Stillwater, Kenduskeag and Penobscot. Great smallmouth fishing the Penobscot. Hike along the Kenduskeag in Thoreau's footsteps. Several canoe races in April.

Sunkhaze meadows just up on rt 2 and is an exceptional area for nature wandering and canoeing.

Garland pond, Pushaw lake, silver lake in Bucksport for fishing.

Visit Eddie's Flies on Broadway a bit before the rt 95 entrance. Eddie also does some guiding on the Penobscot.
