Don't ask how you know which 'side' is which. I don't know the line, only the neighborhoods!

Good luck, I hope I helped a little.[/quote]

Just for the record Bangor is separated into East and West sides by the Kenduskeag Stream. I thought everybody knew that

Last time I drove through Dixmont there was a sign for Peabody. Though I do not see it on my map.

I graduated from a unit school in rural, I say rural Tennessee. We had 1st-12th grades all under one roof. The only time we were together was on the cheese wagon (bus) on our 17 mile, one way ride home or to school. I graduated with a huge class of 28. Approximately 30% of the 28 have Bachelor's degrees, and 4 have advanced degrees. A small unit school with good teachers doesn't need much of an administration. I fear that the consolidation of schools in Maine will do what happens in Florida when a new school is built. Because many teachers have tenure, they are more or less guaranteed a job. That guarantee is regardless of their teaching ability. So, what will happen is that the low men/women on the totem pole will be turfed. Adios, hasta la vista, and what you will be left with may be less than desirable. I am not certain about teacher tenure in Maine, but most states have some sort of tenure. Consolidation is not always good where the rubber meets the road. I can tell you from experience, for every one administrator you lose, you will lose almost 3 teachers. End of story.

Go-Bangor -- take an hour or 2 to walk through downtown Bangor and stop into some of the shops there. You might be surprized what is offered. They are local people too and could use our business. Most of the money spent at the Mall supports corporations out of state.

I attended Abe Lincoln from 1978-1982. A really good school from what I remember. Stopped in a few years ago while on vacation with the family and talked to the principal there - real good guy. I moved away in 1982, so if anybody reading this happened to go there and finished HS in 1990, give me a shout.

The Bangor School system is one of the best in Maine and, by far, the best large school system in Maine. The tossing around of the word "modern" is a little disconcerting. Bangor uses only tried and proven teaching methods and will make every attempt to not follow the herd into the next educational fad (remember "open schools"). Their size allows them to offer courses designed for all levels of performance. So, if your child is a wizz at math but has trouble with history, you can mix and match so they can excel where they can and be helped where they can't. Only a large school can provide those opportunities.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Bangor is very supportive of its school system. They want the best, demand it, and are willing to pay for it.
