Hey all,

I'm thinking of applying to grad school (English) at University of Maine, and just wondering if there are many places in the area where a person can sit, read, have a hot chocolate, use the computer, etc.

We have plenty such places in Ohio -- Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Boston Stoker, a couple Barnes & Nobles and a Books & Co. -- and, being something of a homebody, I've found them useful for the purposes of not sitting around at home all the time! Any insights would be much appreciated!

There are both Starbucks and Tim Hortons in Bangor.

There is also books a million, which I believe still has a cafe. There are some diner type places downtown that might also fit the bill. I think you'll have no problem finding what you are looking for.

Thanks for the info!

Here's hoping Stephen King habitually hangs out at one or the other of them...

Not a chance. King uses his house (*houses*, actually...they're side-by-side and beautiful, you should put it on your "must-see" list if you're a fan) mostly in the summer if at all and doesn't tend to hang out in area coffee shops. I did run into him once at the YMCA, though.

Maybe he shops at the local Walmart (or does he have people who do that for him?) -- haha.

I have seen King in local restaurants several times over the years.

Ha! You never know! Whatever people he does have are very discreet, which is in keeping with how private he and his wife, Tabitha, are.

What would be the etiquette in terms of approaching him, do you think? I'm thinking just on a say-hello, maybe shake his hand basis, not to ask him to sign anything, etc. And of course I'd never show up on his doorstep, or "make a point" to try and be somewhere I think he might be. Just thinking in terms of if I *happened* to run into him (which I imagine could conceivably happen, if I end up living there for 2-3 years).

Of course the topic of this thread is veering quite a ways away from its original intention, LoL.

I think proper etiquette is to leave him alone. Imagine trying to eat a meal and having person after person trying to introduce themselves. I've never spoken to him in a restaurant and never seen anyone else in Maine do so. That's probably why he still lives here.
