Hi Everyone - I am transferring to University of Maine, Orono in the Fall 2008. My fiance and I want to find a place off campus to rent. He is in the National Guard and I'm studying to be an Elementary School Teacher. Does anyone have any info on where to look for cheap but safe rentals and can anyone give me information on the Board of Education opportunities there. I understand that the schools have a program to help you with your loans if you commit time to their school system? Looks like we're settling in!! Stephanie

The Orono / Old Town / Bradley / Veazie area has a lot of rentals focused primarily on college students. Show-up two - three weeks before the semester starts and the market will be flooded with them. One week before and none will be left open.

I have taught in maine for 19 years and have never heard of a school paying someones loans. There was a program through the finance authority of maine - fame - that teachers could get $1500 scholarship that you didn't have to pay back if you taught an additional 2 or 3 years after completing your degree. I used this when earning my masters. I don't know if the program is still in effect.

For job opportunities - use www.servingschools.com - most schools post job openings here.

Hi Stephanie, and welcome to the Maine forum.

I know that, at one time, the Dakota's had a program such as the one you are referring to, but I don't think Maine ever did.

Good luck to you both as you relocate to our beautiful State and get settled in.

ETA: I just Googled "new teacher incentive programs" and came up with a few within just a couple of minutes.

Alabama has a $20K scholarship program for people who agree to stay.
Virginia has a $15K signing bonus for teachers willing to work in "hard-do-staff" schools. But you'd probably need a Glock in your purse from the sounds of it.
There are also programs in NC, FL & PA to name a few.
