How gnarly are the Maine trails. Would I have to have a Side X Side with four wheel drive or would two wheel drive suffice?

I have a choice of these three four seaters.
I'd just like to state I'm not into racing or even going fast at my age.

Pioneer 1000 four seaters
Maverick MAX X ds TURBO seaters
Tomcar TM4 seaters Rear wheel drive

I'm not into Razors. Sorry

Trails that allow side by sides are shown on our ATV maps. Those trails are not "gnarly". Most towns in Northern Maine allow ATVs on town roads. They are not allowed on state roads except to cross bridges over rivers or railroads. We don't have many trials that are gnarly.

Atvs on public roads, now that there, is the way life should be. Now i wonder if you can register an atv as your familys main vehicle... (J/k about the last part ofc, but its still really cool they allow it).

I've logged a couple thousand miles on trails from Newport to Dover, Houlton south to Smyrna area, Houlton north, around Greenville and north to Rockwood then on to Pittston Farm and over to Jackman. To a limited extent I've done the Downeast rail trail as well. If your looking for trails to just take it easy on and see the sights, Newport to Dover on the rail trail is a super easy ride, there are offshoots which can get a little sticky, but nothing you should have too much trouble with during the summer when its dry. If you go to Houlton, its the same deal, rail trails north are nice and easy. Jackman to Pittston Farm is mostly dirt roads, limited areas of rough terrain and nothing that would require more than 2WD. The trail rail in Ellsworth is also a cake walk being that it is a rail trail. All of these areas have off shoots that are much more fun when you have 4WD and want to throw some mud...but with a 4 seater and the family in tow, I don't think you'll be looking for that kind of excitement anyway.

Bottom line, there are plenty of trails that a 2WD can travel with no issue.
