Hi,

Moving into Bangor and just need home internet. No cable as I dont plan to have a TV right away. What would the rates be approximately. I know it will depend on the amount to data, but still a rough idea would really help. Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays.

We live 20 minutes from Bangor. In our little town we do not have cable, our phone company offers dsl. It costs us around $30/month. There is no data limit.

Hi...thanks for the reply. It was very helpful. Just wondering if I could just get internet connection without a phone line. I have a cell phone and so would not be needing a land line

Yes, if you get DSL without corresponding LandLine service it's called a 'dry loop' connection. Obviously, you will need the copper pair from the TELCO hooked up at the NID, even though you won't actually be using "telephone" service.

My DSL runs about $30/mo for 15/1 service, my actual speeds are:

Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps): 1181
Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps): 17727

SlyFox had a bad experience with his DSL, which I believe was due to his location, distance and general condition of the phone lines and equipment in his area. He was unhappy and switched to CABLECO.

However, I have the TELCO DSL and it is working well...disclaimer: I have the knowledge, tools and tech skill to maximize performance by re-wiring my house with CAT5 LAN cable and maximizing the S/N Ratio, as well as being within a couple thousand feet of a brand new fiber-optic drop to DSLAMs.

DSL service is highly dependent on line quality and distance to TELCO DSLAMs. Service speed and quality decline with increasing distance.

Keep in mind your local public library, if one is close. They should have many computers with free internet and no time limits (usually). All free. The best invention ever

The Bangor public library has PCs that anyone [with a library card] can use for free. There is a 30-minute time limit.

Most libraries do not enforce time limits unless there is someone waiting.
