My husband and I are considering relocating to the Bangor area. Is Bangor gay friendly or are their areas we should avoid? We are retired and may work part time.

Welcome.

I live about 20 minutes North of Bangor.

Within my small social circle, I know a few homosexuals and three transexuals.

I am sure that they face some level of opposition anywhere they have lived. I do not perceive that what they face here is any worse than it would be elsewhere.

I agree with Submariner. I don't think I've met any gay people, but judging from Bangor at large, I doubt you would encounter much prejudice. One transgender woman was a member of the Senior Center that once was in Bangor and I don't think members treated her any differently than anyone else. She did encounter problems at the Hobby Lobby store and many of us avoided the store for a long time because of it.

Bangor itself is kind of Bohemian but Maine is a mixture of extreme poverty to comfortable affluence and in many communities they live side by side.
