I think I remember. They overwhelmed the town's welfare system and stretched resources. Most were unemployed and many were hard to employ because they didn't speak English. The mayor asked them to stop moving family members to Lewiston because they couldn't afford to support them. A few people were verbally violent but I don't remember anyone being physically hurt. I don't think this story would be different if 1,000 white people moved into Lewiston, were difficult to employ because they didn't speak English and didn't have a high school education, and wanted the town to financially support them.

The only Indians we give a hard time to are our own native ones - we won't let them have a casino.

I don't feel we really are like that. We don't use our time up that way causing problems with others. We have things we need to do like work, family, and how to co sign loans for gas fill up.

If I was from away or in any way different ..l come to Maine. I have been to 32 states and I still love Maine.. it's my home.. always will be.

From what I understand he wasnt even running or on the ballot last time and he was re-elected.

Is it Waterville or Auburn? I think it's Auburn, just for the record.

I asked my DH and he said it's Auburn. I was actually relieved, only because I couldn't imagine that I had been that unobservant. You know, looking right at a person but not really seeing them??? I would hope I hadn't been that rude.

The Ellsworth American, a weekly newspaper on the upper mid coast of Maine, published a four part series in 2006 called Maine, The Whitest State. You might find it interesting. It was Auburn, Maine and he was elected again as a write-in. Sorry about the mistake.
