Rangers won their seventh straight heading into the All-Star Break, beating Trevor Cahill and the Athletics, 2-0 on a two-run 6th inning homer by Adrian Beltre (19) as Matt Harrison pitched 7 and 2/3 innings of shut-out, six-hit ball and Neftali Feliz got his 18th save. Texas is 51-41, a season-high ten games over .500, but only a game ahead of the Angels in the AL West race.

How about Derek Holland? I wasn't so sure of him being part of the rotation this year but he has certainly proved himself with two complete game shutouts after his shortest outing of his career against the Marlins. And watching the Yankees/Blue Jays game yesterday - 5-0 in one inning isn't the worst that can happen. Bartolo Colon gave up 8, only 3 earned, in a 16-7 pounding north of the border.

Anyhow, Rangers are 52-41, 1.5 games ahead of the Angels. Hopefully with another sweep of the offensively impaired Mariners, Texas can gain a little cushion between them and the Angels.

Not to toot my own horn but, toot-toot, more to toot the value of statistical analysis:

This is what I said about Holland before the season:

One of those options is Derek Holland. Holland debuted in 2009 with mixed results. After spending most of 2010 in the minors he finished up the season in the bigs. He posted a K rate of nearly a batter per inning and a walk rate around the league average.

Holland has been worth 1.6 WAR this season, and is on pace for 2.8 WAR this season. I had him figured for only 2.7 WAR. He's a good pitcher.

I was way wrong about Ogando though...

I don't know much about Ogando except he was the Rangers' second best reliever last season. He relied on his fastball (64.3%) and slider (30.8%) in his 42 innings last season. He also threw a change about 4% of the time. Like Feliz, if his change is major league quality he'd be more valuable as a starter, but I can't imagine they'd give a guy with 3 minor league starts a spot in the rotation.

Excellent analysis on Holland...I just don't have the time to put in for all the stats on a regular basis. Wish I did though....
