Today the Giants Ryan Vogelsong went 8 innings, gave up 4 hits, 1 walk and 1 run to Colorado, it was his 4th win of the year against 1 loss, and his ERA stands at 1.68. He has struck out 42 in 42 innings while walking 14.

Vogelsong has been out there as the replacement for Barry Zito who is expected to be able to return in two weeks. At the post game conference today, the reporters were sort of beating around the bush trying to get manager Bruce Bochy to say if Zito still had a rotation spot waiting for him when he returns. Bochy beat around the bush not really answering until someone finally put it.."Will Vogelsong be staying in the rotation?" Bochy confirmed it..."He'll be going out there every five days and we'll figure out the rest when we have to."

Well, we know that Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez and Bumgarner won't be losing their rotation spots to Zito, and there are only five such slots, so Bochy's announcement has the effect of telling us that Zito will be used out of the bullpen when he is ready to go. So Barry will be an 18.5 million dollars a year middle reliever.

Unless....any of you clubs out there need pitching? How about a refreshed lefthanded veteran starter, former Cy Young Award winner?

They could give Zito away for less than nothing, assuming they'd have to pay a big chunk of his salary or they could move someone like Sanchez who has actual value in order to get someone on the team who can actually hit the ball.

sorry to see Rich Hill has to have another TJ surgery

he started out as a promising power lefty for the Cubs, hurt his shoulder, then lost the strike zone (not Rick Ankiel bad, but pretty close)

after the Cubs let him go, he had short stints with the Cards(never made the bigs), and the O's and his 1st TJ surgery, but never regained his form from his Cub days.

then he reinvented himself

he showed up in Boston (his hometown team) near the end of the 2010 season as sidewinding situational lefty, and was good at it.

this season to date Rich has a line of

9 apperances, 8 total innings, 12 k's, 0 earned runs

I wish him luck, hope to see he's back in the bigs next yr

Better the former than the latter I think. Finding an available hitter who is so much better than whoever he was replacing on the field that it produces more value than the difference between Sanchez and Zito...that would have to be a pretty good hitter. Good hitting isn't exactly prolific at the moment.

I suppose it could all be worked out by WAR, filling in the names of hypothetical batters Sanchez might bring.

Paul Konerko 1/3rd of a way to a real solid season yet again. And I was mocked for liking the 3 year contract the Sox signed him too. If he gets 1.5 productive years that contract is justified in my mind.

December 8th 2010 Konerko inked a 3 year $37.5 million deal with Chicago. The actual value is slightly less than $37.5 million because $7 million in payments are deferred from 2014-2020.

If we assume the standard $5 million per Win Above Replacement with 5% salary inflation per year then Konerko would have to be provide [abacus] about 7.5 WAR over the course of the contract to justify it.

Konerko's WAR:
2011 (thru June 7): 1.5
2010: 3.9
2009: 2.0
2008: 0.5

So far this season Konerko has been excellent. If he continues to perform at the same rate he'll provide 3.9 WAR for a value of (3.9 * $5 million) $19 million. $37.5 million - $19 million = $18.5 million remaining.

So, Konerko would need to provide 2 seasons worth of play at the rate he is currently performing at to justify the contract.

Can he continue at this rate? I don't know. He's 35 this year. He's coming off his best season ever after a few down years. But there's nothing in his profile to suggest he can't keep it up. His numbers so far this year are pretty similar to last years'

2010: .393/.583 (OBP/SLG), 11.4 BB%, 20.9 K%, .326 BABIP, 19.5% HR/FB, 19.8/35.1/45 (LD/GB/FB)
2011: .392/.552 (OBP/SLG), 10.8 BB%, 16.1 K%, .318 BABIP, 17.1% HR/FB, 19.7/37.8/42.5 (LD/FB/FB)

Less strikeouts, that's always good. A bit less power.

If Chicago could just get Dunn to hit.

*Cot's

Rangers lose on a walk-off single by Alexi Casillo in Minnesota, 5-4, despite long homers from Josh Hamilton (4) and Nelson Cruz. (15) Cruz's, which made it all the way to the upper deck in left field, makes me question how accurate the distances they give on these long-balls. Cruz was marked at 453 or 463 feet.
