ESPN's Franchise Player Draft - ESPN

If you were starting a franchise and you could pick any player in professional baseball, who would be your franchise player? That's the question we asked 30 of our resident baseball experts, who will participate in ESPN's Franchise Player Draft, beginning Wednesday at noon ET.

If I have the #1 pick I'm probably taking Evan Longoria

I like Longoria, but I'd probably take one of Votto, A Gonzalez, Miggy Cabrera or Pujols ahead of him.

or If I wanted a premium defensive position I would probably take Tulo or Cano

Pujols is 31. Votto-27, Cabrera-28, Cano-28, A-Gon-29, Tulo-26

Age is what puts Longoria over the top for me. Tulo would likely be my 2nd choice.

If you get Longo or Tulo for 8-10 years you are getting their, likely, peak years whereas if you take Pujols you're going to get some of his decline.

Another reason not to select Pujols, Votto, M-Cab, A-Gon etc because if you don't get one of them, you'll have a chance at the other.

The drop off from Longoria (and Zimmerman) and Tulo is much steeper.
