Cardinal pitcher P J Walters has given up 11 home runs in his career. Two of them were hit by Carlos Lee, both with the bases loaded. Lee has never faced Walters without hitting a grand slam.

In 1914 catcher Les Nunamaker threw out three runners attempting to steal in one inning. I don't know if anyone else has done this.

He tied Jocko Milligan of the American Association who did it in a game in 1887.

No one will break that record, you can't throw out four base stealers in a single inning.

Speaking of stolen bases....

On July 25, 1930, the Philadelphia Athletics pulled off a triple steal twice during the same game against the Clevelend Indians.

On May of 1980, the Oakland A's had two steals of home in one inning against the Royals. Hasn't happened since.

.
If the throw is in time and the infielder drops the tag for an error, the catcher still gets an assist and a caught stealing. He could have four that way.

10.08(f) When in the scorer's judgment a runner attempting to steal is safe because of a muffed throw, do not credit a stolen base. Credit an assist to the fielder who made the throw; charge an error to the fielder who muffed the throw, and charge the runner with "caught stealing."

It doesn't say the catcher is credited with a caught stealing, it says he is credited with an assist and the runner is charged with a caught stealing.

I do not know if he is or isn't credited, but the above rule does not clarify the matter.

During 2010-11, there have been 14 pitching appearances in MLB by position players. Eleven of the fielders were unscored-upon, and their combined ERA is 2.97.

Default Philadelphia Phillies losing streak????

Climactic. They have 98 wins and six games to win 3 and set a Philly record. I recall the game Halladay Pitched when they needed it to clinch and how it was a 1-0 nail biter. Maybe the Phillies love drama and will wait until there are 3 games left and make a run for the gold. Anyway a team of this talent and depth sure know how to make it interesting. Maybe that's why I love these guys.

Maybe they're planning to set a record that will be easier to break again next year.

By winning # 98, Philadelphia has sustained a remarkable run of improving their win total every year for five consecutive seasons. They don't want to go crazy and win so many this year that it will be close to impossible to keep the streak alive in '12. They should take a dive on their remaining games, settle for the 98 wins and that way will only have to reach 99 next season.
