Congrats to Derek Jeter for his milestone; it truly is a real achievement.
Still, I like to put things into a long term perspective because the length of the season has changed over the years, i.e., more games means more at bats and more hits.
Jeter has 3000 hits in 9600 AB for a .313 avg. with 1000 walks. Ruth had 2872 hits in 8400 AB for a .342 avg. with 2000 walks.
If Ruth had been at bat 9600 times, he would've had about 3282 hits and 797 home runs.
It took Hank Aaron over 12,000 at bats to hit 755 home runs.
It took Barry Bonds 9847 at bats (and steroids) to hit 762 home runs.
I'm sure the same math would work for other old baseball greats and we'd see them as even greater.
Too many of today's stats (not Jeter's) are riddled with steroid abuse and I don't pay any attention to them.

If you are going to that extent, consider some other factors:
Favoring the recent players
Better sports medicine and much better conditioning overall.
Higher salaries mean that the player can play ball full time.
Pitching dilution (30x12 vs. 16x10)
Designated hitters extended the careers of many 3,000 hit players (Molitor, Murray among others).
Steroids
More games per season.
No military service
Favoring the older players
Higher salaries mean that there is less incentive to play forever.
Lower salaries and short-term contracts provided additional incentives.
Fewer relievers and fewer pitchers to learn.
Travel schedule
More time off during the season (doubleheaders and more travel dates)
Smaller talent pool. (No AA and few import employees)
The slider.
No astroturf or artificial surfaces (Oliva, Dawson)

Using said method (4.42 runs/game):
Jeter is still 84 hits shy of 2000 with a per 162 game line of:
653 AB, 200 hits, 113 runs, 16 home runs, 65 walks, .306/.376/.441
Ruth per 162 games
536 AB, 178 hits, 131 runs, 44 home runs, 127 walks, .332/.462/.668
I think the overnight train rides may have been more tiring for the players than today's jet flights.
In those days the overnight train rides were local and the teams only travelled 8 or 9 states, no trips to Seattle, LA, etc. . .
At any rate stats are nice, but there are many more variables to consider thus, render them inconsequential in this instance, because if they were of any significance they would be adjusted accordingly, it is what it is.
If I were a rich man, if I was Michael Jordan, . . .if this, if that, if, if, if. . . this moment belongs to Derek Jeter and his great accomplishment as a New York Yankee.
Yep, the East Coast Sports Programming Network won't shutup about it...of that you can be assured..
And what's with Jeter being known as the captain..?
Other MLB teams don't have captains.
Oh wait, I checked it out...only 3 teams have captains..the Yankees, Red Sox, and White Sox. Figures.. 2 of those clubs think they're better than anybody else, and if you're not convinced of that fact.. no problem, they'll just buy your support..the same way they try to buy titles..
Give it a rest. You have such an inferiority complex. Every player that come up to a record in baseball gets covered a ton. Remember when Bonds was close to the HR record? They interrupted EVERY ESPN telecast for each at bat. It's not just a Yankee thing. If another guy was about to hit 3000, they'd do it too. Wait until Arod is about to break Bonds record. No matter who he's playing for then, it will be the same constant coverage.
