The Giants are an organization rich in arms but poor in bats. They made a short term gain trade because they have a shot at winning it all once more.

The Mets paying most of Beltran's salary was a big plus, and if he moves on to another team after '11, the Giants will get a compensation pick in the draft. SF is trading the potential of Wheeler, for two months of Beltran and the potential of whomever they draft with that compensation selection.

Unless of course Sabean reverts to his previous foolishness and signs the 34 year old Beltran to some five year 95 million dollar contract.

Indians add Fukudome to OF.

The Indians could use a power bat, which Fukudome isn't, but with Choo and Sizemore on the DL and guys like Austin Kearns, Travis Buck and Ezequiel Carerra getting the majority of playing time Fukudome is an upgrade.

P Carlton Smith and OF Abner Abreu are going to Chicago who will also pay some of Fukudome's salary.

Yes. Wil Nieves was traded for $1

His 'remaining salary' is about $270,000

The Giants seem to think this as well. Beltran is playing rightfield tonight against the Phillies. Torres is in center and Schierholtz was shifted to left. Ross is on the bench.

Beltran is 0-3 in the game with two strikeouts...knew it was a bad trade.

You might be interested in knowing that Willie Mays was either 0-4 or 0-5 in his first series of at-bats for the NYG back in the day. Give Beltran a chance. If he is batting .220 with few RBI'd and no homers at ATT Park in a month, THEN it will have been a bad trade.

Angels indeed quite interested in #Cubs Aramis Ramirez, and if Ramirez waives no-trade rights, would be perfect fit

John Heyman writes

source: pence was told during last night's game he was being pulled due to trade, but then he wasnt pulled

Ken Rosenthal

Confirming report by @jaysonst: #Astros trying to land add'l parts from 3rd team to make Pence deal work with #Phillies.

Beltran just singled in a run for SF in the first inning against the Reds.

I knew this was the greatest trade ever.

Phillies trade prospects for Houston Astros' star outfielder Hunter Pence

PHILADELPHIA - Ruben Amaro Jr. didn't want a rent-a-player, a guy who would come in for three months and then hit free agency.

The Phillies general manager wanted someone who would be here next year.

In trading prospects to the Houston Astros for Hunter Pence on Friday, the Phillies got a career .290 hitter with power who will remain under team control through the 2013 season.

Send prospects Cosart, Singleton, Zeid to Houston

Thank you Ed Wade! He has done his best work for the Phils in Houston

Also you forgot to mention that Ed also agreed to pay financial considerations to keep the Phils under the luxury tax on this deal. Honestly this deal was way better than one could have hoped. They kept their two key prospects and Worley and Brown. So lets recap. A solid #5 (almost a Chase Utley that bats right and plays RF) for a first baseman that didnt factor, a decent single A pitching prospect, a pitcher with a 6+ ERA, and something to be named later plus you paid most of Pence's freight - Ed Wade for the Phillies HOF - This may be sweeter than his Oswalt gift last year on some of the logistics...
