I think that starting and stopping a game 6 (or a game 7 for that matter) would have been difficult for either team, but it would have made St. Louis' uphill climb even that much steeper. Obviously, Washington didn't want a great start by Colby Lewis to be squandered, but he had Holland to fall back on, and Holland was dominant in his first start. For the Cardinals, though, it would have been disastrous to have a wasted start by Garcia at home. They would have nobody but Lohse and Jackson, both of whom have been awful past the third inning. Not only do you ensure that Garcia gets a chance to go into late innings at home (where he has been a much better pitcher statistically), but Texas would also face Chris Carpenter on his full 4-day rest schedule.

On a side note, I think there's no way that Washington doesn't start Holland in game 7 if it goes that far. If Texas somehow coughs up game 6, they would need their confidence back, and there would be absolutely no reason to go with anyone other than Holland in that situation. But if he doesn't start Holland in a game 7, Washington would be forever second-guessed. It's the no-brainer pick...even if we're getting a bit ahead of ourselves here.

Personally, I think the Rangers have to be favored in game 6 with Lewis on the mound. Moreover, they've been the better clutch team in the series. There's just no two ways about it. The Cardinals were on top of their game in game 1, but it's been mostly Texas ever since, that massive pile-up in game 3 notwithstanding. The Rangers figured the Cardinals lineup out. As long as they can get the Cardinals to bite on breaking balls, they've got it in the bag, I'm afraid. And the cold weather would only help them that much more, giving the ball more break and coming off the bat stiff.

But the Rangers do not want this to go to a seventh game. The Cardinals have won in so many must-win situations the past 30 days. This would be nothing new to them, but it would uncharted waters for Texas.

Temperature for both games about 50 at the start, light winds (under 5 mph) and no rain in sight.

This could very well end up being a 7-gamer. Pressure is on the Cards to even the series tonight. If the Cards extend it to Game 7, then they will have the momentum.

Well, certainly more momentum than they will have if they are eliminated in Game Six.

The momentum business has been studied and it is a myth. There is no relationship between winning a game one day and winning another the next. Teams do not lose on Sunday because they lost on Saturday.

That wasn't the point. Of course momentum doesn't decide who wins or loses. Some have already written off the Cards without realizing how close some of these games could have been won by them if certain plays had gone their way.

I'm not writing anyone off until it's over. This has been a reallly good series for both teams and can go either way.

Anyhow, we're just minutes away From Game 6

After that two-run homer to Lance Berkman, Colby Lewis has really settled down nicely. 9-pitch (8 strike) 1-2-3 2nd inning as well a 1-2-3 3rd. He's also held Albert Pujols to an 0-2 night, although my heart sank when he hit that last ball and the whole stadium thought he hit it out.
