Red Sox trade SS Marco Scutaro to the Rockies for P Clay Mortenson

Mortenson had a 9.42 ERA in AAA last year.

He's certainly not good, but he's, just as certainly, not THAT bad.

Red Sox sign Cody Ross

I'm not at all sure the team is better with Ross than Scutaro

It is for the post season. Ross is a proven post season performer.

Former Phillies closer Brad Lidge signs with the Nationals.

Sounds like it is for $1 million guaranteed plus incentives. A good get for Washington. There's a chance they'll be in the wildcard hunt this year. An extra arm in the bullpen is always a good thing. If they aren't in the hunt, and Lidge is pitching well, they can always spin him for a lottery-ticket prospect.

Lidge isn't what he used to be. His velocity is down about 6mph from what it was in his Astros day. But he can still be a useful pitcher. His performance at the end of 2011 would be worth about a win if he could sustain it for an entire season.

The #RedSox signed John Maine to MiL deal. "They think he can be a heck of a reliever in the American League East.”
He was pretty bad in the minors last season. More walks than strikeouts.
