Never reaching his so called full potential power hitting outfielder Pat Burrell has retired. He helped the Phillies win the 2008 World Series, and the Giants win in 2010. But, it was not all rosy. Many times the fans should have been booing Burrell instead of Abreu. Abreu was better and even now at his age with his declining skills he still is. Burrell got a free pass in Philly. I was always a very vocal Burrell critic. Lets not overdo it praising him. He had some power, but was inconsistent. One of the dime a dozen Dave Kingman types that have passed through this game.

Pat Burrell wound up with a decent career--290 plus homer and 974 rbi.

He played hard----I never saw him not give his best effort. He was good in the clubhouse, and provided veteran leadership later in his career.

He had a good---decent career----enjoy your retirement Mr. Burrell.

I thought he put together a pretty decent career. I wouldn't classify him with Dave Kingman though, I thought his career performance was more like Jay Buhner.

His BA was a bit lower than anticipated, but his walk rate was very good so his OBP was decent.

Injuries are injuries,so he didn't have a long career. If we say he fell short than we likely say the same thing about Greg Luzinski.

The Bat. Will always remeber he and his dog Elvis riding down Broad St with the Clydesdales in the 2008 championship parade. Hear the Phils may sign him to a 1-day contract so he can rightfully retire as a Phillie.

Burrell probably holds the all-time record for most years played as a regular in MLB after it became obvious that he did not possess the tools to play as a regular in MLB.

I think that's so stupid to sign for 1 day and then retire.

Why? Its to show appreciation for a guy that was a big part of the franchise and its success.

I moved out before the Phillies were good - however, when I was living there Pat the Bat definitely received very vocal criticism ..... plenty of people who were happy to focus on what he wasn't, instead of accepting what he was

Who was the previous record holder? Rick Cerone?
