I saw that the 'Stros got Dexter Fowler (a one-time Astro killer in Colorado). And Chad Qualls is coming back. Didn't see that one coming.
Yeah, Fowler will be a good choice for center field once he arrives. When he was a Rockie, he played Minute Maid pretty well during his visits. When he was at the plate, we just couldn't get him out, so we think he'll be a good fit at the top of the batting order. Jeff Luhnow is still looking for another reliever (a closer) and a big bat.
The Astros are on pace to rake in an estimated $99 million in operating income (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) this season. That is nearly as much as the estimated operating income of the previous six World Series championship teams — combined.
...
The regional sports network Comcast SportsNet Houston pays the Astros an average of $80 million a year to show their games — about $50 million more than the Astros got under their previous deal.
The massive boost in revenue means that the Astros have plenty of spare money. They could pay for their current payroll six times over with money from their local television deal alone. And they bring in nearly $40 million from other television and radio deals.
Maybe this is way the Astros are dragging their feet on the whole CSN debacle.
^^^ Yeah, saw that when it came out. They do need to hurry up with that TV deal and get it completely straightened out, especially if the team might make a 20-game win improvement this coming season. It also helps when your minor league system is the majors' most-improved in a two-year stretch.
By the way, there is talk of Jim Crane and Nolan Ryan getting together to discuss what Nolan might do for the 'Stros. Yes, Reid is already on board, but he also warned for us not to get our hopes up just yet. A year ago, no one would have expected Nolan to come back to Houston to be with the franchise he truly loves. Now, he might get that chance again, even in a small role.
I wouldn't want Ryan around my club if for no other reason than he looks like the unhappiest person on earth these days. Every time they had a shot of him in the stands at Arlington he looked like he was tremendously pissed off about something. He looks like he is two seconds away from firing someone.
Good night for the Astros last night as they got some important production from a key player in their offense. This is why they got Dexter Fowler this past offseason. They've earned a day off today.
Astros have gotten off to a good start tonight. They win convincingly over the Yankees, 6-2. All the scoring for Houston took place when they needed to do it: in the first two innings. Yankee starter C C Sabathia almost got chased from the game early.
I know it's just one game, but it's an important beginning when you win on Opening Day.
Well, an up-and-down first week has just ended, and the Astros are 3-3. They have one game left with the Angels in Houston before taking to their first road trip. I'll be happy if they can split the series with L.A. and then leave on a high note.
Ugly yesterday. But a .500 season is a big improvement from last year. I think the O/U is 63 this year.
