The fact is if Ruben Tejada was actually facing the right way on that play when he got injured, this whole thing would be a moot point. Same with the home plats collisions: home plate collisions have been happening for 100+ years, and because a star in the sport gets hurt on a fluke play we have to rewrite all these rules in regards to blocking the plate, giving runners a lane, etc. Totally unnecessary!
Same with the second base rule: Because someone broke their leg when they were faced the wrong way on a force play we have to rewrite all these rules on what constitutes an out, what constitutes a hard slide/vs. an illegal slide. These force plays have also been happening for 100+ years, and we decide to change because someone facing the wrong way in the playoffs broke their leg on a slide?? Leave the rules the ^%$k alone! I can't even tell what's an out and what isn't at second base now, it's a joke! It used to be: does the fielder beat the runner to the bag. Now it's "does the runner hold onto the bag, where does his slide start, does he reach his hands up, etc."
Troy Tulowitzki's RBI single in the 11th gave Toronto a much-needed win. Both starters were great. Estrada for the Jays and Santana for the Twins each went 8 and allowed a pair of runs. The win went to closer Osuna who pitched the 9th and 10th, while Rule 5 pickup Joe Biagini pitched the 11th for his first big league save.
Jays impotent bats noodled their way to another loss. Toronto could only manage 2 hits against Nathan Eovaldi and 3 relievers.
With that being the first of 12 consecutive games against the Yankees and Red Sox, the Jays have a chance to spiral out of contention early if their hitting woes continue.
They face Sabathia on Thursday afternoon. If the Jays don't get 4 or 5 runs off him, since they'll be sending out mostly righties, and CC hasn't been effective against righties the last couple of years, especially in that little league stadium in the Bronx, then I think we can put our finger near the panic button. We won't have to push it quite yet, but we have to be prepared to do so.
