If they finish in a tie, Pittsburgh takes the division. That's what tiebreaker is. How many ways do I have to phrase it?

If they finish in a tie, wouldn't they have to do a tie breaker game the way the Mariners and the Angels did in 1995?

Not if second place is a playoff team. Yankees and Red Sox tied in '05. Yankees had tiebreaker, so they won the AL East and Boston was wildcard.

But how can that be determined? How does Pittsburgh take the division? What determining factor?

Just wanted to express my thanks to the Pirates for sweeping the Rangers, inflating the A's division lead to three games. It is always nice when the closest rival has something really demoralizing, like getting swept in a September series, happen to them.

Unfortunately, St. Louis won last night, so now the Pirates are one game behind. That four game losing streak has come back to haunt the Pirates.

Pittsburgh has the advantage. They just have to finish in a tie.

In order for there to be a tie, St. Louis has to lose some games in concert with Pittsburgh winning some games.
