A rather startling factoid has emerged today...

"... there are just nine players in NFL history who have pocketed $100M to date. There were 10 players on the 2013 New York Yankees' payroll who have either made $100M in their careers, or had contracts guaranteed to pay them that...." Link to story.

Excerpt: "The Yankees list of $100M men? Alex Rodriguez, Vernon Wells, Mark Teixeira, C.C. Sabathia, Alfonso Soriano, Derek Jeter, Ichiro Suzuki, Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera and A.J. Burnett (according to Baseball Prospectus, $8.5M of his 2013 salary was paid by the Yankees even though he was with the Pirates, and yes, Burnett is well over $100M in his career). Catcher Brian McCann went over the $100M mark when he signed an $85M deal with the Yankees this offseason, and Yankees free agents Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano will enter the club this offseason."

Cano is leaving the Yankees for a 10-year / $240M deal with the Seattle Mariners who will almost certainly have a player of declining output for the last half of the deal. Perhaps the Yankees learned their lesson from the A-Rod contract and didn't feel like repeating that experience. IMO Seattle will regret it, but we'll see.

While we're at it, Curtis Granderson (age 33 in March 2014) is leaving the Yankees for the Mets in a 4-year / $60M deal. This contract is more reasonable in that like most players, Granderson probably only has a few more good years before the inevitable decline and retirement.

Yankees just lost 2 key players and unless they find some fine young talent out there it seems they will be at a disadvantage versus Boston.

They may well be at a disadvantage versus BAL, TOR, and TB as well. They are turning into the Philadelphia Phillies -- old and broken with nothing on the farm. Maybe they can score big in the Rule 5 draft.

Local paper interviewed Pedroia about Cano's 240mm deal (Pedroia plays the same position, same age and just signed 110mm for 10 years......130mm less). Totally classy response from a great guy......He congratulated Cano for the big contract but noted he himself is thrilled to be playing for Boston and he is more than happy with his contract noting it is more money than he could ever spend!

Seattle radio station says Cano isn't worth that big salary.

Excerpts:

- He has averaged 29 home runs the last 4 years and though it's sure to change, right now he's on a pace for 4 this year. He has averaged 45 doubles the last 5 years and is on a pace for 32 this year. He has averaged 105 RBI the last 4 years and is on a pace for 88 this year.

- Seven Mariners have more home runs than Cano, including Brad Miller, who's averaging just .154. .... look at his OPS, Cano's .739 is far below his career OPS of .856.

The AL West, where hitting careers come to die. Except, oddly enough, in Oakland.

The OP's comment is a worn out exercise in wishful thinking. I've been hearing it for over 50 years.

As for Cano, he should hit for a good average, but I expect his power numbers to plummet. In any event, I'm glad he's gone from NY. I was disgusted by his lack of hustle. And I agree with Rivera who stated in the new book that he would prefer Pedroia over Cano. Not because Pedroia is a better player but because he is more dedicated to winning. Cano's decision to join an organization that is going nowhere is a pretty good indication that the prestige of the big contract means more to him than being a winner.

Attitude does not win games, talent and performance win games. The A's utility infielder, Eric Sogard, has a wonderful attitude, is an excellent all round athlete, a great team player, a terrific teammate and is dedicated to his team winning. He is also a banjo hitter who makes a lot of outs. Would Rivera also take Sogard over Cano?

I think not.
