Sometimes it's boring because of the obvious: You must wait for anything "exciting" to happen, like a base hit, a home run, bases loaded, someone reaching home, etc. Until then, it's just the same old pitch the ball-umpire calls "Ball!" or "Foul Ball!" or "Strike" thing. Sometimes strikes can be exciting because a pitcher can have a high strike streak and the innings pass quickly.
A layman wouldn't even understand what's going on all the time.
Yesterday, I watched a game in which the home team had a 7-5 lead in the 8th. A young reliever for the home team came in to start the inning, and with the bases empty, gave up a double, a 4-3 ground out (runner held at 2B), a strike out, a walk, a double steal, and another walk to load the bases.
One of the visiting team's better hitters came to the plate, and the young pitcher kept composed enough to promptly strike him out on 4 pitches. He got out of the inning without giving up any runs, and the look of elation on his face was enough to strike joy into any fan's face.

Yeah, boring stuff.
Your anecdote sounds like "luck."
