Cano on DL. This is the year of the Ace bandage.

Yeah, the injuries are certainly part of the equation. But as of tonight, the last four games the M's have been outscored 46-5. This is ugly and getting uglier. Too many inexperienced pitchers, no offense, and some bad breaks. Good grief. I won't give up quite yet, but this season is turning into a disaster and it is still only May.

The M's have lately become an object lesson on the razor-thin differences between good teams and bad teams in baseball. Once the dust clears, they'll be back to being one of the former.

The guys on the radio make it sound like the Mariners are out of it. I remembered that a few years ago my other team, the Dodgers, were "out" at this point, so I did a little checking and found this:

June 3, 2013: Dodgers were 24-32. in last place, 7.5 games out.
End of 2013 Season: Dodgers were 92-70, in first place, 11 games ahead of the next team.

I like this Mariner's team. With all that's happened to them so far this season, I like them even more, and I'm not giving up on them in June.

I would normally agree but the Astros are so far out in front and still red hot. I cannot see them catching them. Wild card is still out there though. Lots of ~500 clubs at the moment so there is hope for that.

Fangraphs gives the Mariners a .4% chance at catching the Astros for the division.
and a 15 (well, 14.9) % chance at a wild card.

Well, they just took the Rays out.

6-1 on this current home stand with 4 games left. Obviously, the 3 with Toronto are going to be big.

The way they have been beating Minnesota, the leader of the Central Division has been impressive and encouraging. Still, past experience keeps me from getting too enthusiastic, they have gone through these streaks before only to fall into another losing streak soon after, even with starters back. Lack of consistency has been their biggest problem for many years.
