Opening day is less than a week away . 3 games on Sunday: Yankees @ Tampa, San Fran @ Arizona, Cubs @ Cardinals, with the other 24 teams opening the next day on Monday
and hope I pick better day to go to game w gf this year. Last year I went 1st Sunday vs Phils, high was 43 and damp. Lets just say I still hear about it now and then. Miserable day to be a game.
I'm not in the right mindset yet. The pre-season magazines all came out early this year...first week of February. And I finished reading the 2017 Baseball Prospectus a month ago. My season preparation peaked too soon.
Anxious to see if Harper, McCutchen, Heyward and Sandoval can rebound. Want to see what Gary Sanchez can do over a full season.
The Giants did nothing apart from signing a new closer...as though the expectation is everything else will go right and they fixed the biggest problem from last season. I'm not shot full of confidence, but then they didn't look that impressive on paper in the three years when they won.
Bryce Harper has been having a monster Spring. He reported to camp at 230 pounds, up 15 from last season, and has been spending all of his free time in the weight room. He also, for a change, has been going out of his way to avoid any controversy.
All the signs suggest that his 2017 season will be more in keeping with his 2015 year rather than last season's decline.
Counting the days. Have been ready since my team got beat in the second round of March Madness. Snow predicted for Boston this weekend, though, so worried about whether my Red Sox will play on Monday.
2017 Spring Training here in Cactus League around Phoenix is within a few days of ending. I went to six games this year and enjoyed it. After attending MLB games for 60 years I finally caught a foul ball this year in a game on Feb 27 over in Scottsdale. Lots of nice small ballparks all over the area, about a dozen of them.
Today I saw the Rockies beat the Padres. In spring training you often see odd things. Today I saw:
1. Rockies SS (Story) fling himself on the ground to stop a hit up the middle, grab the ball, roll over, flat on his back, toss it to 2nd for the force out and then the 2Bman (LeMahieu) threw to 1b (Mark Reynolds) to get a double play. Damnedest double play I've ever seen.
2. Later in the game a swarm of bees took to the field and several players and the ump had to lie flat on the ground to avoid them. We watched this swarm earlier in the game as hundreds of bees built a hive of sorts on a microphone attached to the net behind home plate. Stadium staffers carefully relocated nearby fans. Any time a foul ball hit the safety net the bees got agitated and flew around.
3. Saw a bat fly into the stands and hit an elderly woman in the head; they rolled her off in a wheelchair to check her out.
4. Saw a catcher pick-off a runner at first.
