Nixon played parts of 17 seasons in MLB. He amassed 1379 hits and had a .270/.343/.314 line. He played in 2 World Series and was on the losing team in both.
Apparently, he left his house this morning to go golf and never arrived.
The two possibilities that jump out are
1) that he, as a former athlete, was targeted.
2) that he, has a guy who's had some drug related problems, is having a drug related problem.
I haven't thought about Nixon recently, and whenever I have occasion to think about these kinds of guys I try to guess their career and 5 year peak WAR.
I guess 22 and 11 for Nixon.
I was close on the 5 year peak. Nixon put up 9.1 WAR between 1989 and 1993 (and about 1 more WAR if 1988 and 1999 are switched). But he only put up 9.8 WAR for his career.
Glad he is okay. If tragedy had befallen him then it would have become bad manners to continue talking about how Otis was among the ugliest guys to ever play the game.

The Captain of the All Ugly Hall of Fame Team, Willie McGee, was with the Giants at the beginning of the '90's and when the Braves came to play at Candlestick, you had what was certainly the ugliest centerfielders to ever play in a game simultaneously. Otis should consider himself lucky that there was a Willie McGee, otherwise he would own All Ugly centerfield.
YOUR STARTING CENTERFIELDERS
Before these two, Hack Wilson used to occupy center on the All Ugly team
But he was displaced. Looking at pictures of Hack when I was a kid, I was always curious as to how someone like that could possibly run fast enough to play centerfield. But then I saw Kirby Puckett play and understood that such things were indeed possible.
The Captain of the All Ugly Hall of Fame Team, Willie McGee...
Thanks for the mention and photo of Willie McGee. When I first saw the thread about Otis Nixon missing, I thought "Well, maybe E.T. finally went home." Then I saw the photo of Nixon and realized that I was confusing him with somebody else. I knew that the guy that was nicknamed "E.T." was a Cardinal, so I tried looking up baseball nicknames by team, but couldn't find him.
But you came through with the guy I was thinking of.

All Ugly Team Catcher - Andy Etchebarren
Sure, no problem.
The all ugly battery would be Etchebarren:
catching either:
Don Mossi:
or
Randy Johnson:
Randy of course replaced Warren Spahn as the lefty starter on the All Ugly Hall team
But did you know that the part of Warren Spahn was played by Fred "Herman Munster" Gwynne?
I remember Wally Moon from my baseball card collecting days, as being somewhat of an ugly spud
