They have a chance for an above .500 season or even a playoff birth in the expanded playoffs.

Best case scenario: The additions of Jorge Soler and Avasail Garcia give the OF a punch, while Jacob Stallings adds a presence behind the dish. Trevor Rogers, Sandy Alcantara, and Pablo Lopez each take another step forward

Worst case scenario: the rotation struggles, bullpen struggles again, and they don't do well against the Braves, Mets and Phillies.

Prediction: I'm looking for Rogers, Alcantara, and Lopez to have really good years. Who knows when the Mets get Jacob deGrom back, while the Phillies could have a historically bad defense & bullpen, so a second place finish isn't out of the question. 84-78, 3rd place finish in the NL east.

Season starts with 3 games in San Francisco on Friday. Logan Webb (11-3, 3.03 in '21) starts for the Giants while Alcantara (9-15, 3.19) starts for the Marlins. First pitch scheduled for 4:35.

Default 0-1

Marlins 5 @ Giants 6 (10 innings).

Darin Ruf & Joc Pederson drew back to back 2 out walks in the 1st, but jacob Stallings picked Ruf off at 2nd to end the frame. Avasail Garcia reached on a 1 out error, 2 batters later Miguel Rojas had a single, but Stallings had a ground out to end the inning to keep the game scoreless. Joey Bart walked with 1 out in the 3rd, and scored on an error and Brandon Belt scored on a single from Ruf. Garcia had a 1 out single in the 4th, moved to second on a Joey Wendle ground out, but Rojas struck out to keep it a 2-0 game, and Bart made it 3-0 in the 5th with a 1 out home run. Wendle walked to start the 7th and 2 batters later Stallings cut the Giants lead to 1 at 3-2 with his first Marlins home run, Jazz Chisholm followed with a walk, moved to second on a Wild pitch, but Jorge Soler and Garrett Cooper struck out to end the inning. Brandon Belt homered with 1 out in the 8th, Austin Slater reached on an error with 2 outs, stole second and following an intentional walk Louis Head retired Wilmer Flores on a groundout. Wendle singled to start the 9th, Rojas reached second on an error, and scored on a Stallings singled before the Marlins took the lead on a Chisholm home run, but Thairo Estrada took the 2nd pitch of the bottom half for a home run to force extras, with the ghost runner on second base returning for what is hopefully the final year. The marlins couldn't take advantage as Jesus Sanchez walked, a Jesus Aguilar moved Cooper to 3rd, but Cooper was erased on a ground ball to 3rd getting tagged out in a run down, and Brian Anderson pinch hitting for Wendle struck out. It looked like the Giants wouldn't take advantage either as Mauricio Dubon got doubled off second on a Belt fly ball to RF, but Ruf walked on 4 pitches and than Slater walked off the marlins with a double into the LF corner scoring Ruf all the way from 1st. Logan Webb allowed 1 run on 5 hits with a walk and 3 strikeouts in 6 innings, Dominic Leone (1st hold), Tyler Rogers (1st hold), and Jake McGee (1st hold) allowed 1 run on 1 hit (1 home run) with a walk and 2 strikeouts in a combined 2 innings, Camilio Doval (1st blown save) allowed 3 runs on 3 hits (1 home run) in 1 inning and Jose Alvarez (1-0) had 1 strikeout in 1/3 of an inning. Sandy Alcantara allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits (1 home run) with 5 walks and 4 strikeouts in 5 innings, Anthony Bender (1st blown save) allowed 1 run on 1 hit (1 homer) with a strikeout in 1 inning, and Anthony Bass (0-1) allowed 1 run on 1 hit with a walk in 2/3 of an inning.

Game 2 of the series is on Saturday. Carlos Rodon (13-5, 2.37 last year with the White Sox) makes his Giants debut coming over from the South side of Chicago, while Pablo Lopez (5-5, 3.07) takes the ball for the Marlins with first pitch scheduled for 4:05.

Default 1-1

Marlins 2 @ Giants 1.

Miguel Rojas had a 1 out double in the 2nd but Brian Anderson struck out and Jesus Sanchez struck out to keep it a 0-0 game. Jon Berti lead off the 3rd with a single, went to 2nd on a Wilmer Flores error, advanced to 3rd on a Wild pitch by Carlos Rodon, and scored when strike 3 to Jorge Soler got by the catcher Joey Bart. Berti and Soler drew 2 out walks in the 5th, but Garrett Cooper struck out to keep it 1-0. Thairo Estrada singled with 2 outs in the bottom half, a Steven Duggar double tied the game at 1, Bart walked, but Mike Yastrzemski grounded out to keep the score deadlocked. Anderson lead off the 7th on the first pitch that Giants reliever Jake McGee threw, Sanchez single scored Anderson, Sanchez went to second on a Jacob Stallings ground out, Sanchez went to 3rd on a Berti fly out, Soler followed with a 4 pitch walk, but Cooper ended the inning with a ground out. Flores had a 1 out double in the bottom half, Estrada followed with a walk, but Duggar struck out, and Bart ended the inning with a force out. Rodon allowed 1 run on 3 hits with 2 walks and 12 strikeouts in 5 innings while McGee (0-1) takes the loss allowing 1 run on 2 hits in 2/3 of an inning. Pablo Lopez also allowed only 1 run on 3 hits in 5 innings with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts, Steven Okert (1-0) struck out all 4 batters he faced, Cole Sulser (1st hold) and Richard Bleier (1st hold) had 1 hit, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts in 1.2 while Anthony Bender (1st save) had 1 hit in a scoreless inning.

Rubber game of the series is on Sunday: Trevor Rogers (7-8, 2.64 last year) gets the ball for the Fish while the Giants hand the ball to Anthony DeSclafani (13-7, 3.17 in ’21) with game time slated for 4:05.

Soler started the 7th with a single, 2 batters later a Sanchez single moved Soler to second, but Jesus Aguilar ended the inning with a double play. Trevor Rogers (0-1) allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits with a walk and 3 strikeouts in 5 innings. Anthony DeSclafani allowed 2 runs on 8 hits with a walk, hit batter and 5 strikeouts in 3.2, Jarlin Garcia (1-0) had 2 strikeouts in 2 hitless innings, Zack Littell (1st hold), and Tyler Rogers (2nd hold) allowed 3 hits in 2.1 scoreless while Dominic Leone (1st save) had a 1-2-3 9th with 2 strikeouts. In other East action from the weekend: The Mets won 3 of 4 from Washington, Phillies won 2 of 3 against Oakland, and the Braves and Reds split 4 games in Atlanta. Mets are in first, Phillies are a half game back, Atlanta is 1 back, Miami is 1.5 back and the Nats are 2 games back.

Marlins first of 3 West coast series (they’ll be at San Diego and Arizona in early May and the Dodgers & Oakland in August) concludes with 2 games in Anaheim at the Big A against the Angels beginning on Monday. Default 1-4

2 game series loss to the Angels. Monday they scored 2 runs on only 3 hits in a 6-2 loss, and then Tuesday in a 4-3 loss they trailed early, tied it on a Chisholm home run, before getting walked off in the 9th. They have Wednesday off before heading home for the home opener with a 4 game set against the Phillies starting on Thursday. Sandy Alcantera, Pablo Lopez, Trevor Rogers, and Elieser Hernandez are the scheduled starters in order for the Fish, while the Phillies are scheduled to send Kyle Gibson, Zach Eflin, Ranger Suarez, and a pitcher to be announced (probably Zack Wheeler). Game times are 6:40 Thursday & Friday, 6:10 Saturday, and new Sunday start times apparently as the Sunday game is at 1:40, 30 minutes later than the 1:10 Sunday starts have been in years past. Mets and Phillies have split the first 2 games of a 3 game series, while the Nats and Braves have split the first 2 games of a 3 game series with each series concluding Wednesday. Mets are 4-2 a half game up on the 3-2 Phillies, Atlanta is 3-3 and 1 back, the Nats are 2 back at 2-4, and the Marlins are 2.5 back.

Default 2023: 0-0

Worst Case: They made moves this offseason to try to get more offense, but those moves actually effects their defense more as Jean Segura moves to 3b from SS, and Luiz Arreaz arrives from the Twins which moves Jazz Chisholm to CF, a position he has never played in his career. They miss Lopez in the rotation who was a steady force, Arreaz struggles against NL pitching, and Sandy Alcantara has a subpar season.

Best Case: They retooled their roster to get more offense, and the offense makes up for the defensive shortcomings with the reworked roster. Chisholm puts up another solid season, and actually plays a full season. With Jacob deGrom now with Texas and now out of the division, Alcantara with another dominant season can cement his status as the best pitcher in the division. Maybe if Chisholm & Arreaz can set the table, Jorge Soler, Avasail Garcia, and Jesus Sanchez get the power back they can score a lot of runs, and be in the mix heading into September.

Prediction: Even with Rhys Hoskins likely out for the year, and Bryce Harper sidelined until June, the Phillies with Trea Turner at the top of the order look to be a step above the Marlins, and I don’t see them catching the Marlins or Braves. I have the Fish finishing in 4th at 69-93, 32 games behind the first place Braves. Mets come in for 4 games at Marlins Park to open the 2023 season; Alcantara (14-9, 2.28 last year) starts his Cy Young defense and he goes up against Max Scherzer (11-5, 2.29) in a great opening day pitching matchup. Game time slated for 4:10.

Mets 5 @ Marlins 3.

Daniel Vogelbach walked to lead off the 3rd inning, 2 batters later went to 3rd on an Omar Narvaez single, and scored on a sac fly by Brandon Nimmo, but Narvaez got hung up between first and second on the throw home. Starling Marte walked to lead off the 4th, with 1 out stole second, but Sandy Alcantara got out of the inning with a ground out and line out. Nimmo had a 1 out walk in the 6th, Marte followed with a single with the runners moving up 90 feet on a throwing error by Jazz Chisholm Junior, Nimmo scored on a Francisco Lindor sac fly with Marte moving to 3rd, Pete Alonso would follow with a walk, Jeff McNeil followed with a RBI single scoring Marte to make it 3-0 before Mark Canha flied out to end the inning. Jacob Stallings lead off the bottom half with a double, Luis Arraez would follow with double 2 batters later to score Stallings, and following a strike out of Jean Segura, Garrett Cooper would tie the game at 3 with a 2 out, 2 run homer. Eduardo Escobar had a 1 out single in the 6th, Narvaez walked, Nimmo followed with a 2 run double to put the Mets up 5-3, but Marte and Lindor ended the inning with back-to-back ground outs. Jorge Soler had a lead off double in the bottom half, but they couldn’t score the run as Avisail Garcia flied out and Bryan de la Cruz and Stallings both struck out. McNeil had a 1 out single, Canha was hit by a pitch, Tommy Pham struck out, a wild pitch moved the runners to second & 3rd, but Escobar ended the inning with a strikeout. Marte and Lindor had back-to-back 2 out singles in the 9th before Alonso struck out, which was the final threat on the day as the Marlins went down 1-2-3 in the 9th. Alcantara allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits with 4 walks and 2 strikeouts in 5.1, while Tanner Scott (0-1) took the loss allowing 2 runs on 2 hits with a walk in a third of an inning. Max Scherzer (1-0) allowed 3 runs on 4 hits (1 home run) with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts, Drew Smith (1st hold) and Brooks Raley (1st hold) had 4 strikeouts and 1 hit in 2 innings while David Robertson (1st save) had a 1-2-3 9th with 2 strikeouts.

The second game of the 4 game opening series goes on Friday, one of only 5 games on the Friday schedule. David Peterson (7-5, 3.83) will take the ball for the Mets with Justin Verlander going on the IR, while the Marlins give the ball to Jesus Luzardo (4-7, 3.32) with game time scheduled for 6:40 in South Florida. In other East action from Thursday, the Braves beat the Nats 7-2, and the Phillies lost to the Rangers 11-7. The Braves & Mets are at 1-0, while the Marlins, Nats & Phillies are 0-1 and 1 back.

Mets 1 @ Marlins 2.

Garrett Cooper had a 2 out single in the first but Jazz Chisholm Jr grounded out to end the inning. Jorge Soler had a lead off home run in the second to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead, Yuli Gurriel and Nick Fortes had singles to put runners on the corner with 1 out, but Jon Berti struck out, and Luis Arraez grounded out to end the inning. Berti & Arraez had back-to-back singles to lead off the 5th, but Jean Segura struck out, Cooper reached on an infield second, but Berti was thrown out at home by Jeff McNeil, and Chisholm grounded out to end the inning without any other runs coming across. Brandon Nimmo & Francisco Lindor had 2 out walks sandwiched around a Starling Marte single to load the bases but JT Chargois got Pete Alonso lined out to end the inning. Soler had a single to lead off the 6th, he went to second on a Avasail Garcia fly out, moved to 3rd on a Gurriel groundout, but got left there on a Fortes ground out. Daniel Vogelbach had a 1 out double in the 8th, Nimmo flied out to center, and Soler robbed Marte with a diving catch to end the inning to keep the score at 1-0, and Chisholm had a 1 out home run in the bottom half to complete the Marlins scoring on the day. A.J. Puk allowed a 1 out home run to Alonso, but struck out Mark Canha and got McNeil to ground out to end things. David Peterson (0-1) allowed 1 run on 8 hits (1 home run) with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts in 5 innings. Luzardo (1-0) had 4 walks and 5 strikeouts in 2 hits in 5.2 scoreless innings, Chargois (1st hold) and Dylan Floro (1st hold) had 1 walk and 1 strikeout in 2.1 innings and Puk (1st save) had 1 run on 1 hit (1 home run) with 2 strikeouts in 1 inning of work.

Game 3 of the 4 game series goes on Saturday. Edward Cabrera (6-4, 3.01 in ’22) starts for the Marlins while the Mets give the ball to Tylor Megill (4-2, 5.13 in 15 appearances [9 starts] for the Mets last year) with game time slated for 4:10. This was the only East game on the schedule today as the Phillies, Braves & Nats all had Friday off, so the Braves are in first, the Mets & Marlins are tied for second at 1-1 a half game back, and the Nats & Phillies are 1 back at 0-1.

4 tough games against the Mets, unfortunately came out on the losing end in 3 of them. Kodai Senga and his ghost fork were a tough matchup in the series finale. Homestand continues with 3 games against the Twins before they head up to Flushing, Queens for the Mets home opener starting on Thursday with a day off Friday before the last 2 games Saturday & Sunday.

Mets have made the Marlins look like a minor league team. Lucky for the Marlins with the new balanced schedule they won't see the Mets again until September 18. Road trip continues with 3 games in Philly starting Monday before welcoming in the D'Backs for the weekend.
