The problem with Melvin is the Athletics are fifth in the American League West Division for the third consecutive season. He is not getting the job done. If the Athletics were winning and participating in postseason play, Melvin would be safe. As the Athletics are losing, it is time to separate from Melvin in order to win later.

Melvin is mananging in the same metric friendly way he always has, but at the moment he has a lot of bad players...and if they get good, they are gone.
Grandstander is right. Melvin is not the problem. He's a good manager. It had to do with Billy Beane and other issues that Grandstander mentioned above. With that said, Bob Melvin is not going anywhere.

The Athletics will need to execute decisions after three consecutive seasons in the basement of the American League West Division. Necessary decisions involve ownership investing in a quality product on the field and the front office making baseball decisions to develop and field a team that plays baseball and wins games. Decisions in the clubhouse and on the field are dependent on ownership and the front office.

Save the part about three consecutive seasons in the basement, the above applies to every team every year, I don't get what sort of point you are trying to make.
My point is that the A's could replace Melvin and it isn't going to make a difference, he isn't the problem. The main problem is not having as much money as the other teams, and as a result, not having players as good as those on the other teams. Maybe if they re-animated Billy Martin he could whip the team into a competitive year, but the Martin magic never lasted beyond a season or two. Assuming Martin opts to remain dead, who exactly do you think is out there who could do a better job with the team than Melvin has done?
Updating the thread; it's very near to the hot seat. I still think Pryce will be gone as well as Gibbons. Ausmus definitely needs to go. Mackanin for the Phillies definitely needs to go as well because there's a reason why the Phillies are awful.
Gibbons, John; Toronto Blue Jays (American League)
Gibbons is out after five seasons.
Mackanin, Pete; Philadelphia Phillies (National League)
Mackanin is out after approximately two and one-half seasons.
Matheny, Mike; Saint Louis Cardinals (National League)
Matheny is on the hot seat. If the Cardinals, the Chicago Cubs, the Milwaukee Brewers, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Colorado Rockies continue to play on par this week, the Cardinals will be eliminated from both National League Central Division and National League wild card races. Departing with him would be hitting coach John Mabry and pitching coach Derek Lilliquist. Matheny is on a three-year extension through the 2019 season.
Price, Bryan; Cincinnati Reds (National League)
Price is out after four seasons.
Questionable
Melvin, Bob; Oakland Athletics (American League)
Disagreements with other members regarding Bob Melvin has led me to consider him questionable for termination.
The Athletics have issues with fielding a bad roster and a rinky dink front office.
Melvin is in the last year of a two-year contract extension. If he wants to win with a club with a better roster and a competent front office, he will move on.
Snitker, Brian; Atlanta Braves (National League)
The Braves has a club option on Snitker for the 2018 season.
Price had a club option for 2018. The Reds picked up the club option.
It remains to be seen if Price's coaching staff will change personnel for the 2018 season.
