I realize Bunning won 100 games in each league and pitched a no-hitter in the A.L. and a perfect game in the N.L., but why is he in the Hall of Fame and Luis Tiant isn't?

I don't think either belong, but if I had to go with one, it would be Tiant.

Bunning - 224 wins, Tiant - 229 wins
Bunning - 184 losses, Tiant - 172 losses

Bunning - 3.27 ERA, Tiant - 3.30 ERA
Bunning - .549 winning %, Tiant - .571 winning %

Bunning - 40 shutouts, Tiant - 49 shutouts
Bunning - 2855 Ks, Tiant - 2416 Ks

Bunning - 3760 IP, Tiant - 3486 IP
Bunning - 151 complete games, Tiant - 187 complete games

Bunning - 1 twenty win season, Tiant - 4 twenty win seasons

Probably the main difference was that Jim Bunning was a man who knew how to win elections. Along with the HoF vote, he got elected to the US House six times, and to the US Senate twice. Winning the vote of the Veteran's Committee was likely the easiest.

Trivia....when Luis Tiant beat the Reds in Game Four of the 1975 WS, he threw a complete game....173 pitches.

True, true.

173 pitches, cool ... and probably on three days rest.

By BBRef WAR, Tiant was the better pitcher. He ranks 43rd among starters. Bunning ranks 68th.

Tiant. 3486.1 IP, 66.0 WAR, 114 ERA+ (229-172 W-L)
Bunning. 3760.1 IP, 59.4 WAR, 115 ERA+ (224-184 W-L)

I’d prefer Tiant as well, though I’m okay with both in the HoF.

It was. The 173 pitch game was October 15th. On October 11th Tiant pitched a complete game shutout to win game one of the series. He was much more efficient that day, needing just 100 pitches.
