What had Ortiz been doing that would motivate someone to take out a contract on his life? The investigation may turn up some things Big Papi didn't want us to know.

This thing's a confusing mess.

Not long ago the shooter said it was a case of mistaken identity, which today's news also points to.

But I'm still not buying that, how can anyone mistake Ortiz?

Dominican Republic authorities say David Ortiz was not intended target of shooting

If the above is true, then that is really awful luck for the alleged mastermind who did the hiring. Not only was his intended target missed, but instead the inept hitman drilled a world famous athlete, triggering what will be a much stronger pursuit of the mastermind than if the hit had been successful.

(CNN)The alleged mastermind and the financier of the shooting of former baseball star David Ortiz were arrested in the Dominican Republic on Friday, police said.
The arrest of Victor Hugo Gomez, who allegedly planned the botched hit, was announced first, with scant detail, via the official Twitter account of the Dominican National Police. The post said additional information would be released later Friday.
Referencing the government's announcement that Ortiz was not the intended target:
Quote:
The twist in the investigation left many Dominicans in the baseball-crazed Caribbean nation of 11 million people skeptical of the official government version.
While police said the men were dressed similarly, they have different appearances.
Ortiz is a strapping 6 feet, 3 inches tall and 250 pounds. He's one of the most recognizable athletes in the US and the Dominican Republic. Fernandez is smaller and thinner, with a lighter complexion.
