Tanking is the act of intentionally loosing so a team, or another, is affected in the future. Some teams are accused of throwing their season away so they can get a better prospect in the future. Some teams also tank so that the wild card is affected by this action.

This seems to not be in accordance with the way the game is supposed to be played. It might seem like a strategy for the long term success, but others dismiss this idea.

Now that the wild card games are getting closer, I actually wonder if some teams are intentionally trying to loose so that another team can advance.

What are your thoughts on this? Should MLB be more strict on this occurrence? Or do you think otherwise?

I think that every team is entitled to their decision, and that they have the right to make whatever decision they want, based upon what the manager calls for.

I don't have a problem with it, and it very rarely actually works out to multiple championships, the 11-13 Astros is about the only franchise that has actually had multiple years of success, but then again they were banging trash cans, so who the hell knows?? Last year and this year they both made the playoffs (this year not official but they'd have to lose like every game they have left this year to miss), and only won the one title.

How's the "Process" in Philadelphia work out for the Sixers??

Tanking does not always net better prospects and provide trends upward in winning. The Baltimore Orioles are an example of tanking and losing.

Theo Epstein built his entire championship-building model around it.

In this day an age I think many players/teams really spend a lot of time in the video room preparing for games. However, when you're a last place team I think there is less & less time doing this. Especially if you're retiring soon or will be with another team. Think about Albert Pujols with the Angels. I bet his time in the video room went way down with the Angels & Maybe that's why he looked as bad as he did. Gets traded to a winner & now he's at least serviceable in some ways at the plate.
So I don't know if any player is going to literally suck on purpose but I do think some players/teams are just not going to spend as much time preparing therefore the result is less prepared which is less wins.

Tanking for a better draft pick seems pretty pointless in baseball, many of the best players are international signings. Unlike basketball or football, an incredible number of high draft picks end up as failures, while lower picks end up stars. So I doubt it would be much of a beneficial strategy

Its MLB's leaderships fault. Look at the team payrolls this year. You have the top teams making 4 times as much as the bottom teams. That should not be allowed. I just looked at the #'s, the Yankees payroll is 4x higher than the Rays.

I dont even thing 2 times as much should be allowed...maybe 1.5 times as much. 4 times as much forces teams to tank.

The 2021 Rays team and organization collectively, has got to be the most productive per-dollar-spent MLB group of all time. Rays have the 4th lowest payroll, but the best regular season record in the AL, have EVERY minor league team in their respective playoffs, & I think 2 won their leagues. The Rays have done this 2 years in a row/ without tanking, like the Marlins have made a habit out of since the Wayne Huiezinga days....remember the Blockbuster Video guy who perfected tanking?
