Top spenders are LA Dodgers, Mets, Yankees, & look who has the best records in the MLB right now.

Yes, there are outliers, like the Rays, but the correlation between spending and wins is quite strong.

The Rays outperform most teams every year in this metric...dollars spent per win.

From a business perspective, the Rays are the #1 team in the MLB, and have been for years.

Poster boy: Steinbrenners Yankees.

New kid on the block: LA Dodgers

You look at the Oakland As and Montreal Expos and all they did was develop players who left ASAP for richer teams.

Small market teams with less money have always been also-ran. There is a reason Moneyball was made into a movie, although winners today are also embracing analytics unlike olden days.

It has always been about deep pockets and much mores in the Free Agency era.

Agreed, and it does take away from the game, & the overall fan approval levels as evidenced by falling attendence, and tv ratings so low, the networks hardly ever telecast games anymore.

Too many teams have near-zero chance of winning the their division, a pennant, or the world series. Occasionally one breaks through, but not often at all.

NYY has only one ring in 20 years. In 22 yeast this decade, 15 teams have won the WS, 15 have not. I'm OK with that.

It works in soccer. The elite teams then compete against the other elite teams in Champions League. The bottom 3 teams get relegated so the bad teams are playing meaningful games all season. In English Premier League, the race to make 4th place and qualify for Champions League is often more interesting than the race to win the league. There’s also the FA Cup where all teams compete and you have the equivalent of an epic upset where the Toledo Mud Hens eliminate the Yankees.

Try to imagine the Yankees being relegated to the Minors. There would be questions in the House.

Who cares?? The bottom 10 teams have more World Series titles combined in the last 12 years then the top 5 do! And the only title the top 5 has in that time frame came in a shortened season.

$ = wins ...its undeniable, or no team would be spending 2x, or 3x as much as other teams.

I'd love to see how the Yankees & Dodgers would do on the Rays budget.

Who cares? the 2nd tier teams fans who rarley get to see theri teams compete for the Division, Pennant, or Series, that's who. Meanwhile, the teams fans who spend 'uge sums of cash pound theri chests & boast abot their teams.

I'm pretty much writing baseball off. I see MLB getting a lordship over the wholr game, and redesigning it as a profit enterprise, rather than a fun game.

I see it becomimg fully platoon, absorbing surplus talent with separate offensive and defensive lineups like the NFL.

They're die-hard against the shift. Someone tell me how the shift makes the game less fair, less competitive, less absorbing to the fan? What's the penalty for jumping out of the zone as the ball is pitched? A judgment call as much fun as balk-calling. With 4 umps watching for 7 "fielders balks". What an insane proposal. It's like making a rule against Willie Keeler "hitting 'em where they ain't". Lou Boudreaus Indians (yes, I said Indians) shifted against Ted Williams 70 years ago. Now, suddenly, with Lou on the Hall, they have to ban it. Makes me wanna cry. They killed our game. You basterds.

Exact reason why I stopped watching the MLB three decades ago.
