Yes, I know he’s in the minor leagues, but there’s something electric about Elly de la Cruz.

If you haven’t heard of him, he’s a 21 year old who plays for the Louisville Bats (AAA). He’s a 6 foot 5, 200 pound shortstop with top of the ratings chart speed and arm strength.

Here’s a clip where he’s on first base and teammate Christian Encarnacion-Strand hits a bloop single to shallow center field. Elly goes to third, CES takes second on the throw and then de la Cruz breaks for home.

In another play this year, he’s playing third and on a close play at first he beat the runner on a throw measured at 99.2 miles an hour.

The same guy who had 3 hits in a game with an exit velocity of 116 mph or more.

He may flop in the bigs, but raw talent like that brings a glimmer of hope to even the fans of the most downtrodden of small market teams.

Made his major league debut last night.

1 for 3 with a double, groundout, strikeout and 2 walks.

The most impressive thing is that in his first game in the bigs the Dodgers were clearly trying to pitch around him.

His double had an exit velocity of 112 mph, making it the hardest hit by a Red this year. His double and groundout to second were the two hardest hit balls in the game.

It’s the base running that really grabs you though. At 6’5” he runs like a gazelle.

Even in his first series as a big leaguer the opposition was trying to pitch around him. Think about that. The trouble with that is if you walk him, he’s on first base and likely to steal second. He stole his first base today and the throw wasn’t even close.

But the biggest thing about Elly is that he plays with a joy that’s infectious.

I have no idea, but it’s going to be fun to watch.

Exit speed on that 457 foot homer was 114.8 miles per hour.

His speed from home to third on his triple was clocked at 10.83 seconds which is the fastest in the majors this year.

Watching him is sort of like watching a precocious colt just learning how fast he can go and what he’s capable of.

I’ve watched baseball for well over 60 years, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a play like the one de la Cruz pulled off yesterday against the ‘Stro’s in Houston.

He’s batting left handed. The first baseman is guarding the line. He hits a hard grounder to the first baseman.

Easy out, right?

Wrong

He beats the first baseman to the bag, sliding head first and reaching out with that Inspector Gadget arm of his.

WOW!!!!!!!!!

This young man is amazing. He had another good night tonight. I say he's for real and will stick, and become a perrnnial all-star.

Speed is a tool that transcends some of the other tools of the 5 in baseball.

I saw what speed can do when I lived in St. Louis in 1985 when Vince Coleman, Willie McGee, Ozzie Smith, Andy Van Slyke, Lonnie Smith, Tommy Herr, & others stole 314 bases. It was amazing how they could score w/o getting any hits. Their defense was amazing too because of their team speed.

Elly is quickly becoming one of those rare players where you start timing your runs to the kitchen or bathroom, because you’re afraid to miss what he might do next.
