All the starting pitchers are hurt. I have been a fan almost my whole life. They have nobody in the minors that can be brought up to help with their rotation.

Evans the GM has been too smart either.

The Giants need to set sentiment aside and bench, or release, Hunter Pence. Of the 183 position players qualified for the batting title, Pence ranks 182 in OPS and is tied for last in WAR at -0.6. He has been helpless at the plate and brutal in the field. He is 35 years old and very unlikely to stage a turnaround.

The Giants are looking ahead to replacing Buster Posey eventually. Their first draft selection (#2 overall) is Joey Bart , a catcher from Georgia Tech. He recorded a slash line of .359/.471/.632 with 16 home runs and 38 RBIs in 57 games.

Quote:
Bart, a junior, won the Atlantic Coast Conference's Player of the Year award, besides being named first-team All-America and a semifinalist for two national player of the year awards. He's also a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award, emblematic of the season's top collegiate catcher. Posey won that award before the Giants drafted him fifth overall in 2008.

The team should swallow the rest of Hunter Pence's 2018 salary and give the guy his release. He is an extreme liability at the plate and with his glove. While he has always been awkward looking, he used to get the job done anyway. Now he is just awkward and watching him in the outfield is painful. He is slow, he slips, he stumbles, balls ricochet off the wall and go through his legs. If he was mashing the ball at the plate his cruddy defense might be tolerable, but his slashline is .212/.262/.253...that from a corner outfielder. He has yet to hit a home run this season, just four of his 21 hits have been for extra bases.

Pence is making 18 million in the final year of another stupid long term deal the Giants made with an over 30 player, so he is owed nine million more. He isn't earning it on the field, so why keep sending him out there?

Watched another come from ahead loss today to the Astros. What a blah, dull team the Giants have been this season. They have hovered around .500 all year and never put together the kind of streak which would make you think them capable of doing better.

Instead of embarking on a rebuild, the Giants tried to wring one more season of contention with the remaining ghosts of the '10,'11,'12 championship squad, surrounded by some mediocre add ons.

Rebuilding is going to be more difficult as a consequence because the veterans with heavy duty contracts that they need to unload, are all a year older and even more overpaid. The seven largest contracts on the club all belong to guys 30 and older and all of them are guaranteed through 2021 except Longoria who is guaranteed through 2023 and Samardzija 2020.

Belt 57.6 million - 30 years old
Crawford 45.6 million - 31 years old
Posey 66.2 million - 31 years old
Longoria 68.7 million - 32 years old
Samardzija 39.6 million - 33 years old
Cueto 65.4 million - 32 years old
Melancon 28 million - 33 years old.

The biggest bargain on the team has been Bumgarner who has been pulling down just 12 million a year, and the Giants hold an option for 2019 at that same money....but then he is a free agent.

It is a depressing picture, the club is stuck with a bunch of expensive guys who are all sliding further into their decline periods. I don't think that there is a quick fix.

Very telling.

In related news, the last 2 nights have been good wins over the Dodgers. And last night’s brawl should yield a good, long-ish suspension for Yasiel Puig. Oh I am so sad...
