Whats-his-face of the Knicks got voted in by the coachs last year despite a bad record so I would wager that Love and Griffin make it.
It's easier to get voted in or appointed though if there are a lot of *horrible* guys voted in by the fans whom don't turn out to play...and there has been a lot of that lately. Iverson? McGrady? Yao? LMAO......

I consider getting voted onto the team as a sub to be more of an honor than voted in by the fans. It's nothing more than a popularity contest as far as who starts.
Griffin is definitely an all-star caliber player, so is Love. They don't have enough national appeal as yet to be voted in by the fans, and the coaches/media who pick the subs will hold team records against them. But make no mistake, both of those guys as singular talents are definitely star-caliber....
A. his blistering season to date involving 8 games player, 1 started and nearly 70 points scored in total?
or
B. His contributions to the NBA over 6 incredible seasons of ironman tenacity where he played about 2 out of 3 games with a mindblowing 10.2 ppg career average and single digit rebounds.
i have to say i dont vote for the allstars, i think the fan voting is the dumbest thing the nba has ever done. sure it is "for the fans" but because it is left up to the public you get voting like the current west conf centers, yao, bynam, haywood, hell i think okur has votes. the fans dont vote for who is playing well, half the world doesnt even care if they play at all they just vote for who they know.
You'd probably get a more representative All-Star team if the coaches selected the players, but that's not really what the NBA wants. Most fans want to see their favorite players in the game, or the players from their team or school or country... not necessarily the best players. Letting fans vote, and especially letting them vote via the internet, creates a huge interest in the All-star game all over the world and let's face it, that's pretty much what the All-star game is all about.
That's fine, but in that case saying 'so and so' is a 10 time all-star shouldn't carry much weight, as it really is a popularity contest. Again, I think being voted in as a sub is better because you're being selected on merit, not on popularity.

completely agree, except when it comes to my boy tim duncan, he is a 12 time all star and deserves the recognition. yao ming on the other hand hmmmmmmmm.

David lee got selected last year when he was with the Knicks. He's with the clippers I think now as part of the trade.

Well, more often than not the fans do get it right. Guys like Kobe, Wade, Lebron, Howard, etc are the best in the league, and them starting in the all-star game yearly is justified from a merit standpoint. Duncan was among the top 5 for most of his career, so his selections are also justified of course.
But every so often, you'll get situations where Yi Jianlian gets tons of votes, one year I think he was almost voted in as a starter. Or Tmac will flirt with being voted in as a starter, even if he's played 5 games and averaging 8 eights. Hell, I'm sure Yao will get voted in as the West starter, just on the basis of the votes coming outta the far East...
