Who would you build your team around? Anchor of a defense or catalyst of an offense?
KG I think is past his prime. If you asked me this question 10 years ago it would be KG no doubt. Now he's a player I would bring to a team that was in a position to win a champion but I wouldn't build a team against him.
I also wouldn't build a team around Dirk. He's probably got about three more season left as a top flight NBA player. He's in the perfect position now. He's got a veteran squad around him with an number of guys that step up and make plays on both offense and defense.
Dirk has 3 seasons left in his tank? Really? His style of play doesn't wear on him. He come shoot threes until he is 40 years old and that fade away is unblock-able.
KG is like having a coach on the court and still can lock most PFs in this league.
It depends on the makeup of the team. With KG, you're going to need closers( Sprewell and Cassell in Minnesota when they made a deep run), Pierce and Allen currently. Dirk is obviously capable as a closer, but needs a defensive running mate alongside him on the frontline( Chandler is the perfect complement for him, imo). Garnett is certainly the more versatile player, but you could make the argument that Dirk has done more with less( that 2006 finals team really wasn't that great,looking at the roster). Honestly Garnett's prime was largely wasted on mediocre teams, with the exception of the 2004 season.
Its always been Dirk. The one time they played against each other in the playoffs, Dirk drastically outplayed him. Of course Dirks career stats are better, with KG a little better rebounder. Dirk is able to lift his team more than Garnett. As greg said KG has never been a good closer. He's gained confidence in Boston, but still, I dont want him taking any final shots or even free throws.
He's obviously a good player, but Dirks a step up from KG. Dirk has been great with three different incarnations of his team, he's consistently lifted them up.
Right now? At their peak? KG has taken some large steps back from his peak, so right now the answer has to be Dirk.

For both in their prime, I would take KG . KG was a tenacious defender who could shoot that midrange jumper and rebound. His teammates feed off his intensity.
