Is there any good places to view the fireworks without having to head into downtown. I'd like to avoid the traffic, we live on the south end towards Prairieville.

One a side note what was the shooting on July 4th years past about...just caught a glimpse of it on tv the other day.

I was there during that shooting... didn't hear about it till I got back to the house, though.

It was just some thug teenager who randomly shot a gun, paralyzing a really cute girl who was just out with her friends.......

it could have been anybody.

tragic.... a bunch of thugs that change the course of that girls life, forever!

But, i'd probably still go down there... Baton Rouge has crime, it's just part of living there I guess. I wouldn't let it keep me from going places.

On a side note, you can always cross the river and watch from the port allen side- you'll see all the cars just parking anywhere by the river and you can bring your chairs and watch over there. I'd imagine it's safer over there.

this is the other dude who got shot.... permanent brain damage. WBRZ News 2 Mobile - News Story Title

I hate to be a downer, but this story really got to me, maybe since I was there and could have easily been where they were... it's just sad and I want to remember the victims! they have to deal with this forever and I'm going to guess the guys who shot have NO money to compensate them in a civil trial. it's sickening.........

anyway, hope someone can be of more help to you with fireworks!!!!!!!!!

I watched fireworks at Zephyr Field after their victory over the Omaha Royals tonight.

Downtown fireworks were fantastic this year. We were able to get in and out relatively quickly with few problems. Most drivers were very courteous. Hope I'm still around to enjoy them again next year!

The fireworks were beautiful and I love going downtown any time, not just for fireworks. Funny, people still think of downtown as scary. My husband and sis in law visiting from Florida went downtown Saturday night and went to threee bars and had the best time, ,never once feeling nervous! It is a great town and I love it here. My sis in law loves it too, maybe she will move here one day as she hates Florida(cannot blame her though, I hated it too when we lived there). Baton Rouge is awesome and like I said, the crowd this year for the fireworks seemed very "normal" compared to a few years ago when a lot of katrina people were living downtown(sorry, but true)....

good point-maybe all the mess in 2007 was katrina peeps.....
forgot about that one.

Like i said, I would still go, and did often go downtown in BR at night (very accessible) and never felt in danger AT ALL, but that july 4th murder scared me since it was a random shooting.

I love capital city grill down there and seeing live music there too. I'd actually buy a condo down there if I was ever to move back- it's definitely up and coming.
