I had posted recently about our daughter and son-in-law moving soon to BR from Berkeley so that he could start his job on faculty at LSU. As we just live over here in Mobile, we headed to BR last weekend to check out some neighborhoods, open houses, etc., knowing less than nothing about the area.

We were pleasantly surprised, having heard some negativity on these boards. The LSU campus is beautiful, the shopping (Mall of Louisiana, I love you!) is far better than Mobile, and we couldn't get over the number and variety of restaurants. We ate at the Capital City Grill (wonderful) and La Madeleine (I know it's a chain, but I loved the cozy atmosphere.) We saw homes in Sherwood Forest (lovely home, but the surrounding apartments left something to be desired), Lake Sherwood Acres (beautiful), and Shenandoah (a real possibility.) We also looked at something on Stanford Ave. (very busy street) and a few other places. We learned to stay south of Florida, and far, far away from Gardere.

I am really looking forward to visiting over there in years to come; the drive was easy, and there are plenty of good, reasonable neighborhoods.

Thanks for the input, and feel free to keep it coming.

Thank you for saying this, and for taking a chance on our town. Far too many people think they're moving into a war zone. Of course, if you're an Auburn/Alabama/Florida fan during football season, you may not want to wear your colors at sports bars like Walk Ons

Won't have that problem; we are native New Englanders and Boston College grads (rooting for them is generally a frustrating experience, with the occasional exception like Matt Ryan or Doug Flutie!) Though we've lived in Alabama most of the last 36 years, we are no more than mildly interested in SEC football, though I'm glad for our Auburn friends.

Would love to see an LSU/Alabama game, though, for the sheer spectacle; I hope that our SIL has access to tickets as a faculty member.

I think we'll enjoy our visits, and exploring the area.

And if you need restaurant advice, do not hesitate to ask. We have restaurants for just about every food preference....

Welcome to the neighborhood! I loved, loved, loved Baton Rouge and all of Louisiana. I wasn't always enthused by the crime, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself there regardless. The entire state has so much to offer, so get ready to take some weekend trips! I've recently had to relocate for work and I really miss Louisiana. Enjoy it

Fortunately though, you landed at my mom's hometown of Mt Pleasant. I love the Charleston area and I find many similarities there to south Louisiana. If you haven't already, you should check out Shem Creek for some great seafood restaurants.

Glad to hear you had a good experience. I still can't figure out how people can say that there are no options in Baton Rouge. Welcome!

Been to Shem Creek and was very disappointed. Everything needed about a cup of Tony's! I miss food with flavor.

Love the positive posts here! I love Baton Rouge, the only thing I do not like is the fact that our entire family live in south Florida and we mis them! Other than that, we love this town!
