We will be relocating to the Baton Rouge area from Dallas, TX summer '13 for my husband's job. Zachary and Denham Springs have been recommended to us as possibly places to reside. We plan to buy a house and have 2 teenage boys (will be 9th and 11th grade at time of move and involved in sports). We are looking for a safe, family friendly area. I am scheduled to graduate from Nurse Practitioner school prior to the move. I will be seeking employment at this same time, any thoughts or advice regarding the medical community? Any thoughts, suggestions, advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks ,

Default welcome

Hey Lindsey - Zachary and Denham both fit the bill for safe and family friendly areas. What are your expectations around commute? I imagine being from Dallas you can manage a decent commute, but just know that if you land a job at a BR hospital you'd be looking at a ~30min drive from Zachary/Denham during rush hour. As for hospitals, my wife works at Our Lady of the Lake hospital in BR and has been generally happy. BR is also home to a brand new Woman's Hospital. You may also want to look into the Baton Rouge General hospital. Good luck!

Thank you so much Drako257! We expect a commute living on outskirts of city, 30min is very manageable . Currently my commute from the north into Dallas is approx 1hr without traffic and up to 1:45 with traffic. We are leaning towards Zachary, but have also heard to look into Denham Springs. We have been told that schools in BR take part in a busing system with the schools, does Denham Springs also take part? I have been surfing the internet periodically at nurse practitioner job openings and it is very limited. I find it hard to believe there are so few openings but unsure how to go about networking from Dallas.

Thank you again for your suggestions !!
Lindsey

If you are simply referring to school bus availability, I don't see why that service would not be available in Denham Springs but I'm not certain. You may also want to consider the Prairieville area, as public schools are decent there as well. It is surprising to hear of a lack of NP jobs, since healthcare is one of the larger employment bases in the area. Check out the Baton Rouge clinic as well. Good luck with your search!
