I'll be driving from Houston to New Orleans next weekend and if I stick on I-10, I would be passing through Baton Rouge hopefully around 10-11 am on Saturday, and returning through around the same time on Sunday. I lived in New Orleans for a few years in the mid 90s, and made this drive many times, but back then, the traffic in Baton Rouge was nothing like it is now.

Since I'll be driving on weekends before Noon, I assumed I'd be okay. Or, would you suggest an alternate route, and if so, which one? So far, some people have suggested either Hwy 90 south from Lafayette coming into New Orleans from the West Bank, or taking LA Hwy 1 from West Baton Rouge, going over the Sunshine Bridge and then back onto I-10.

Thoughts? I'm only interested in trip time, not scenery. Thanks in advance.

You shouldn't have any problems if you're coming through on the weekend. Traffic might back up a little if there's an accident, but nothing major. I always use Google Maps or Waze App to warn me of accidents so I can detour if necessary.

You should absolutely take US 90 from Lafayette. It’s pretty much a freeway the whole way because it’s the future route of interstate 49, and IMO it’s a better drive than to go through Baton Rouge with the 20 mile bridge and the traffic. Take 90 until you get to interstate 310, then take that back to IH 10. Or use the Huey P Long to cross the river. Or even go all the way down Business Us 90 on the Westbank. But yes absolutely take US 90

I would second Achilles’ suggestion to take US-90 from Lafayette as a detour to I-310 in Boutte, which will connect you back onto I-10 and into NOLA.

Just do the speed limit in Jennings area. Those cops have a hard on for out of staters.
