I dont know if you are still checking in on this, but please consider Central. 15-20 minute commute. (I worked DT for MANY years) The schools are great, and will only get better as we get them updated and new ones built. (new town, with new control of our own schools) Great community spirit, and all that you need, from Wal-Mart, to resturants, several GREAT hardware / home improvement stores, boutiques, coffee shops, upscale grocery/butcher/deli, new and comprehensive library, medical and dentists close by. Football, while wildly successful here, is a great excuse to socialize at games where up to 5000 residents frequently gather on Friday nights.
The casinos, being close to DT are also 20 mins away. 30 during morning rush.
Best of luck, and and pm me if you need any more info.

Thank you for the great responses. From what I have learned so far I think public school is out. The Garden district is ideal, but there are no homes for sale there! Spanish town is kind of cute, but the homes are too small and it is too close to really sketchy areas. One problem I have with much of what I have seen of Baton Rouge is that there are too many McMansions with strip malls as the center of towns- feels a bit artificial and souless. Also, some of the homes in the 300k range are only like ten minutes further out than homes in the one million range so I am not really sure if I should even bother buying a home in a more exclusive neighborhood. These gated communities seem to be really for the sake of being pretentious than for safety- or am i wrong here?

Is there an area with a real center of town that is not a strip mall full of chain stores and restaurants? something with a more authentic feel? thanks.

You mean like a traditional downtown ? Or is your definition of "authentic feel" something else ?

Not really, I'm afraid. Perkins Rowe (Perkins and Bluebonnet) and Town Crossing (Corporate/Old Hammond near Jefferson) attempt to mix retail and residential, though......

Feel free to PM me is you have questions about any parts of BR. I've lived here nearly 30 years, so I've seen things change and/or stay the same. As long as you realize we're (generally) not a pretentious place and are a part of Louisiana and its inefficiencies, you'll like it here.
