I was just told I'm being transferred to the Baton Rouge area, or lose my job!! I love my job, so Baton Rouge here I come! I'm suppose to be in the area by the 1st, but they said the 9th at the latest. I don't know anything about the Baton Rouge area, so I'm not sure which areas are the safest to live in. I will be living alone, so this is a big issue for me. I've been told Baker is a good little town, but so far I've had no luck finding vacancies there. I'm looking for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment or house, $600 or less a month. Anywhere in the Baton Rouge area is acceptable, since I will be travelling all around the area with my job. I've considered living within Baton Rouge itself, but I don't know which areas are the safest to live in. I will be going to the area this weekend, staying til Monday. I don't have alot of time, so any advice would be much appreciated! A list of apartment complexes would be great.

First off, where (what part of town) are you working - all over town ? Second off, do you have a family ? I would not recommend Baker.

No, I wouldn't recommend Baker either. Zachary would be the better choice. Don't know how rent is up there though. I know $600 or less won't get you too much within BTR, although there are a few places right under it. Much under that and I would be cautious. There is rent advertised for $375 and so in places like Gardere and Mall City or in other notorious areas.
Depending on where you will be going, you could also check out Denham Springs, Livingston Parish. There are apartments there too. Rental houses are scattered all about, you really have to look for those.
There are a couple of places you could look at along Jefferson Hwy, between Bocage and Airline Hwy that may still have rent between $550-$700:
Normandy Village, Jefferson East, Jefferson Shadows, Jefferson Arms. Those are the ones I know of right off. There's actually another one on Jefferson right at I-12 behind the Keans but I forget the name of that one. I rarely hear of major problems at any of those places and they're all in good parts of town with good access to 10/12 and Airline (US61).

Thanks guys. I will be in the area tomorrow. wish me luck! I will be working in several different parishes surrounding Baton Rouge. I don't have a family. Just me, so I'm not concerned about schools or anything like that. Just safety, and cost of rent.

you guys were right, I don't wanna live in Baker!! Zachary is too expensive for the quality of the housing there (in my price range, I'm settling for $700 cause I can't find anything decent for cheaper). I found a cute place in a quiet part of Central, and one even cuter in Walker. I like the Walker and Denham Springs areas. Looking some more tomorrow. I found a lot of nice people in Walker who were very helpful. I called one number and they hooked me up with about five more numbers for small apartments in the area.

Just reading this but sounds like you have found some good information and met some friendly people. Wish you the best. Pick up a "Gazette" a free area newspaper and you will feel right at home.
