I was accepted into LSU vet school for this coming fall admission and my boyfriend is moving down with me. We are searching high and low for a position for him in advance, which has proven difficult.

he has a BS in biology and most of his experience in animal based, but he also has lab experience. We have heard of peddington??? can't remember exactly but they look promising so far.

Are there any other lab based or animal based (besides animal clinics) careers available in BR or the surrounding areas? Or even if anyone knows someone that I could contact that would be awesome, too.

THANKS!

Pennington is pretty big; they do nurtitional research. There is also a (I think USDA) bee research station on Ben Hur. And there may be some positions at LSU - I know people who were lab assistants there.

He should check and see if the State Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is doing any hiring.

Pennington, LSU A&M (the main campus, aka the football campus) and LSU Agricultural Center (4H, all the experimental stations throughout the state and large research programs in BR) are his bet. Both Pennington and LSU AgCenter are research institutions (no students at all) and independent campuses from LSU A&M (they have their own budgets). All three are under the LSU System. (I know.. it's a bit confusing...)

Pennington is not that big if you guys are coming from the bio "hub" cities. Many peoplr in BR think it is the best research center in Louisiana, but they are not a big player in terms of federal/state funding. LSU AgCenter receive about twice larger research funding than Pennington, but no one in Baton Rouge thinks of them as a "research" place. As soon as anyone hears a word, "Agriculture", they assume not scientific research.

All of LSU institutions (total of 11) are "unofficially" hiring freeze. Obviously, there are some openings in grant-funded positions. He should contact to indiviual faculty members at LSU A&M, LSu AgCenter, and Pennington if they are looking for a BS-level lab person.
