I am pretty new to the baton rouge area. i am unfamiliar with what neighborhoods to avoid. I currently have an hour plus commute to work in the I-12 and O'neal area. The shorter the commute the happier i will be. i am looking for a safe apartment that is not too expensive. I know that it may be difficult feat. Thanks for your suggestions!

Can you give a price range that you can afford? Do you have pets or anything or will it just be you? Also, will it just need to be a one bedroom? Do you prefer an apartment in a building or would you mind renting someone's house? Also, what part of the city do you work in (I'm a little confused)? Is it the O'neal I-12 area? I'll give you some guidance after you answer some of those questions. Good luck!

Sorry for the lack of information. I really dont want to pay over 800 for a 2 bedroom house or apartment, I am open to either option. At the present time i dont have any pets so if the place doesnt accept pets thats fine. i work in the I-12 O'neal area. Thanks for the help.

So, if you require a 2 bedroom apartment and you want to live in a good area and work in O'Neal... I would automatically think you should try to find something near the Jefferson/Bocage area. That area is full of new development, upscale shopping, low crime and many parks and things. There are also many things nearby like malls and movie theaters. I think they have many condos and apartments for rent in that area.

This is NOT any property I am selling (I don't even work in this area), so if it gets removed, it isn't because I'm intentionally advertising, but here is an option for you. If they get removed, just go to batonrouge.craigslist.org and search for apartments in the bocage area.

2 br 2 ba (http://batonrouge.craigslist.org/apa/1117345586.html - broken link)

That area will work well for you because it is right off of I-12 and if you are going East at 8am instead of West then you'll most likely avoid traffic. The same is true for the evenings, so you would probably have a nice, short 15 minute or so commute without traffic and you would live in a great part of Baton Rouge.

That will be the shortest commute for you in the best area I believe. There are other places all over the city, but the commute will increase and you will probably end up in an area that will feel either less safe or questionable.

You would probably be good finding an apartment or rental condo anywhere within a mile or two of 30.424223, -91.094084 - Google Maps
^^there.

Good luck! I hope I've helped.

Just be advised that you won't get any newer properties for $800/month for a two bedroom. Even the 1brs were going for $800 plus. But the older properties, perhaps. Try Jefferson East, I know their 1brs are $690. I think the 2brs aren't much more. The Warwick, has places in the $800s but they also typically include cable/phone, at one time even electricity. Also try Normandy Village up the road on LaSalle, just off of Jefferson/Lobdell.

Otherwise, have you thought about Livingston Parish? Denham within town used to have cheaper places to rent. The newer places would still be higher, but I knew someone who rented out there at some place, I think Polk Rd or something like that, and I know they couldn't afford $800/mo. They lived there for years before finally moving into a house. They were good people, so I would take it the area wasn't bad. They lived on Blvd de Province for maybe all of 6 months before getting out. That area is bad. It's north of I-12 between Sherwood and Millerville.

Apartments/areas to avoid:

(1) Nearly anything north of Florida
(2) Blvd De Province
(3) Gardere/GSRI
(4) St Jean Apartments (Harrells Ferry at O'Neal)
(5) Apartments on the SW corner of Perkins/Essen across the street from Albertsons
(6) Apartments on Siegen near the railroad tracks
(7) Apartments in an area bounded by Airline, Cedarcrest, and Coursey
