I will be a grad student at LSU this fall, and looking for apartments. So far I am considering the following:

Apts:
  • Campus Crossing Brightside
  • Campus Crossing Highland
  • Embassy Apartments
  • On-Campus Apartments (graduate housing)

Other Option:
  • Living in a studio apartment in a house/duplex in the Garden District or other area
  • Finding roommates via Craigslist or other service

Any suggestions for good housing options close to campus with a budget $500-700 per month?

Thank you!

House or duplex in the Garden District!

Most of those college apartments are just awful. They look nice and pretty on the outside, but it isn't until you can hear your neighborhs from three apartments down coming in drunk in the middle of the night that people realize they aren't so great.

Traffic going to campus from the Garden District is also much easier.

garden district! The apartments can more often than not be terrible. The garden district or southdowns would be ideal.

Available NOW Garden District apartment (http://batonrouge.craigslist.org/apa/1708378253.html - broken link)
Something like that would be good.
I will only warn you about one thing- I used to live in capital heights, and in old neighborhoods come roaches! If you can get over that, then you will be golden.
Oh, and rent one ASAP when you see a good one- they go quickly (the cheaper ones)

I am in a similar situation as the OP. I am going to be a graduate student starting in August, and I would like to live in the Garden District (or Spanish Town or Beauregard Town). My problem is that I live in Chicago, and most craigslist apartments come and go pretty quickly. I will be in Baton Rouge for a few days in late May to try to get an apartment for August, but I'm not sure how to go about this. There aren't really any apartment complexes in the Garden District to call ahead, and most craigslist ads are for immediate move in.

What programs are you guys in? That also makes a difference because traffic to the north end of campus is nowhere near as bad as to the south end (especially coming from south of campus)?

I'm going to be in the Landscape Architecture program, so all my classes will be in the design building. I plan on biking to campus instead of driving, so traffic shouldn't be as much of an issue. Anyway, it looks like bike paths connect the downtown area and the garden district to campus. I know the heat in Baton Rouge can be oppressive, but I've bike commuted through several Chicago winters, so I figure it can't be much worse. Also, how reliable are the shuttle buses? I am going to have a car, but I'll be sharing it with my girlfriend who will be looking for a job, so I plan on using alternate methods of transportation to campus. I'd really like to avoid living in the undergrad ghetto area south of campus, but apartment hunting for places around downtown / the Garden District may be impossible from out here.

Shuttle buses are good during peak hours, other than that can be spotty. There are definitely more options south of campus, but not all buildings are undergrad havens. Check out Southgate Towers (kind of expensive), Sterling, and the Empire. Unfortunately, Baton Rouge is not sidewalk or real bike friendly, but I do know a lot of people who bike from the garden district.

Benhwell,

I will be in the MLA program as well! Right now I know one guy coming in to the MLA program that I will probably be sharing an apt/house with. What is your rooming situation? Right now yes, Garden District or grad-friendly apartment looks ideal, and I will probably be looking in late May/Early June as well. I am sure not everything fills up around the school and in the Garden District by then- there are a lot of places to live around LSU. I will be commuting by bike as well.

I sent a PM to you. Feel free to email me if you want to bounce ideas off me.
