Hey guys,

I'm trying to get all of my ducks in a row and would love some suggestions (good or bad) on banks or credit unions around this area. I live out near millerville, if that makes a difference. I would love to use a credit union because i have heard good things about them, but i also don't know a ton about what they offer
thanks

Credit Unions generally require membership that is based on something — like employment. There is a financial institution in the B. R. area that calls itself a credit union, but has no membership requirements linking itself to any entity. In checking their rates, though, it does not appear to have any advantages over the banks that service the area.

I hear a lot of people swear by Neighbor's.
I'm with a state credit union though, and am quiet happy with them.

Neighbors is great - I'd recommend them. They used to be Teachers Credit Union, but now pretty much anyone can join.

I was also wondering about Telco and Pelican State FCU's. Got any scoop on them?

Campus Federal offers a nice 4+% on their checking accounts, which is not bad. I think you have to make like 10 purchases with your debit card to get that rate, but they give you free ATM withdrawals and refund you the ATM fee (i.e., if you use an ATM from another bank) as well.

I joined LA Cap Federal Credit Union this year and have been quite pleased with their checking interest rate and I needed a new HVAC system and was able to get a 4% signature loan with them, which is practically unheard of these days.

Credit Unions can be tied to a group or not. CU's generally offer better rates on loans, but at the same time loan requirements are more stringent and they look for borrowers with higher FICO scores. When I bought my vehicle the bank rates were 2-4% higher than the CU. My Credit Union returns a certain percent of profit to members when they have a good year financially.
