I am 23 year old male who has accepted a chemical engineering job in Baton Rouge and will be starting in August. I was wondering what areas might be desirable to live. I am looking for a safe area that is within 20 minutes of the Exxon plant north of downtown. Cost is not an issue. I would prefer that the area is close to downtown or other areas with things to do (bars, restaurants, etc.) It would be nice if there were people of similar age in the area.

Thanks!

Er, I would not live immediately north of downtown. Exxon is in a bad part of town. But if you most go north, I'd check out Zachary or St. Francisville. The commutes to Exxon are better, although there is not yet a lot of retail and night life up north.

At your age, and having just started out at Exxon, I would look into a higher end apartment complex called the Gates at Citiplace. It's on Corporate in an area called Citiplace, which has restaurants, movie theaters, Barnes and Nobles, and pricier places to live. And I recall a lot of younger Exxon employees liked to live there.
